The announcement included a link to a Sunday <em>New York Times<\/em> story by Mr. Ratliff. In a long article packed with praise from him and others, he wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Her voice clamps into each song, performing careful variations on pitch, stretching words but generally not scatting; her face conveys meaning, representing sorrow or serenity like a silent-movie actor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009duh-oh, and hm! and <em>what<\/em>?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I thought, quoting Mr. Ratfliff intepreting one of her facial expressions; &#8220;I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d better look into this.&#8221; To read all of his article, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/04\/arts\/music\/cecile-mclorin-salvant-jazz-vocalist-tweaks-expectations.html?pagewanted=all\"target=\"_blank\">go here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The next step was to see if I could find a sample of her singing. I found this, recorded four years ago somewhere in France, with  bassist Alain Guiraud and guitaritst Renaud Maret. The videographer was shooting through a glass darkly, but the audiographer, if that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a term, was up close and Ms. McLorin Salvant, singing a great song, was personal.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"440\" height=\"355\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hqE9faJZUFo?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=C\u00c3\u00a9cile+McLorin+Salvant&#038;page=1\"target=\"_blank\"><em>YouTube<\/em> page<\/a> and two following it, have a few dozen clips of Ms. McLorin Salvant, including an eccentric, cliff-hanging version of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I Only Have Eyes For You.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to take a while to catch up with her. <\/p>\n<p>Addendum: The <em>Times<\/em> piece online includes an embedded video of Ms. McLorin Salvant performing &#8220;I Didn&#8217;t Know What Time It Was&#8221; with Aaron Diehl&#8217;s trio.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Memo, or tweet, to Ben Ratliff: I owe you one.
