Coincidentally, a message arrived yesterday evening from Mr. Shew. It was succinct: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Check it out,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d followed by a link to this blistering 1981 Chet Baker version of Dizzy Gillespie\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Blue \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcn Boogie.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d A master trumpeter&#8217;s recommendation of a trumpet performance is not to be ignored. <\/p>\n<p>Check it out.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"> <iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"440\" height=\"355\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UF11uiVZgVc\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><p>Some time ago, I heard a private recording of the Baker Backstreet gig, but I had no idea that it had been released on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freshsoundrecords.com\/burnin_at_backstreet-cd-1497.html\"target=\"_blank\">this album<\/a>. The Fresh Sound website quotes Baker\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pal Artt Frank, the drummer, who recorded the music that night.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Chet confessed to me on several occasions that he had an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Baker-Backstreet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Baker-Backstreet.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Baker Backstreet\" width=\"110\" height=\"108\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3722\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Baker-Backstreet.jpg 110w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/Baker-Backstreet-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 110px) 100vw, 110px\" \/><\/a> uneasy feeling that each time he played could be his last. But whatever the reason, he was fantastic (spectacular!). I thought to myself, this has got to be a very special night. I&#8217;ve worked a lot of clubs with Chet over the years both Stateside and Europe, but this particular night seemed a whole lot different to me. Somehow Chet was really burning&#8230;Burnin&#8217; at Backstreet!<\/em>&#151;Artt Frank<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As it turned out, Chet had seven more years.
