My first thought was simply to list the names of the musicians and their performances, but the comments accompanying your messages were as interesting as the couplings themselves. Wherever possible, the <em>Rifftides<\/em> staff has provided links to pertinent recordings. Some of the pairings don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t seem all that disparate, but perhaps oddity is in the ear of the beholder.<br \/>\nI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll get the ball rolling with two unusual Duke Ellington partnerships. The first was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB000000X1W%2Fqid%3D1138659301%2Fsr%3D1-87%2Fref%3Dsr_1_87%3Fs%3Dmusic%26v%3Dglance%26n%3D5174\"target=\"_blank\">Bing Crosby<\/a> singing \u00e2\u20ac\u0153St. Louis Blues\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with the Ellington band in 1932. At 27, Crosby was in the early stage of his stardom. If you have doubts about how much he owed Louis Armstrong, be sure to hear this.  Mae West does \u00e2\u20ac\u0153My Old Flame\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in full insinuando backed at one point by gorgeous Ellington voicings for clarinets. She sang several numbers accompanied by the Ellingtonians in the 1934 film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2F6305078203%3Fv%3Dglance%26n%3D130\"target=\"_blank\">Belle of the Nineties<\/a>.<br \/>\nNow, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s your turn<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Doug:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>One of the oddest pairings in jazz, I think, was between Gil Evans and the music of Jimi Hendrix on Evans\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00005TOXQ\/qid=1138660646\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/104-9326502-7842302?s=music&#038;v=glance&#038;n=5174\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Plays the Music of Jimi Hendrix<\/em><\/a>. With time, I don&#8217;t consider it to be such<br \/>\na strange pairing, but as a 21-year-old at the time, it was a real<br \/>\nheadscratcher.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnchacona.com\"target=\"_blank\">John Chacona<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Doug:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>I don&#8217;t know if this qualifies, but here goes: 1972&#8221;s BILL EVANS-GEORGE RUSSELL album.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>The late pianist Bill Evans was a mere sideman on several of composer George Russell&#8217;s highly experimental late 50s recordings, but in 1971, with a major contract with Columbia Records, he commissioned a work from the notoriously uncompromising Russell for his second release for the label. The result was the album <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB00008FX6V%2Fqid%3D1138662525%2Fsr%3D1-1%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1%3Fs%3Dmusic%26v%3Dglance%26n%3D5174\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Living Time<\/em><\/a>, one lengthy, often raucus avant-garde piece in eight &#8220;events&#8221; &#8212; some with rock rhythms &#8211; that was so radically removed from Evans&#8217; lyrical pianistic style, that he got lots of hate mail, and his Columbia contract was dropped.
