It has become a <em>Rifftides<\/em> tradition to observe the occasion. Lamenting Paul\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s absence, one of Desmond\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s favorite playing and socializing partners, Jim Hall, once said that he would have been a great old man. That makes sense; he was a great young man. Dave Brubeck said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Boy, I sure miss Paul Desmond.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ellington-Desmond-undated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Ellington-Desmond-undated.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Ellington, Desmond, undated\" width=\"219\" height=\"270\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3123\" \/><\/a>I found this photograph among Desmond\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s belongings and included it in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parksidepublications.com\/takefive.html\"target=\"_blank\">his biography<\/a>. Undated, probably from the late 1950s, it shows Paul and Duke Ellington chatting at the railing of a ship. Where they were bound, I have been unable to discover.
