{"id":3049,"date":"2011-10-31T17:19:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-01T00:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/?p=3049"},"modified":"2011-10-31T17:19:46","modified_gmt":"2011-11-01T00:19:46","slug":"help-for-jim-knapp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/2011\/10\/help-for-jim-knapp\/","title":{"rendered":"Help For Jim Knapp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A concert in Seattle this week will kick off a fund-raising effort to benefit the composer, arranger and bandleader Jim Knapp. In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Jim-Knapp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Jim-Knapp.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Jim Knapp\" width=\"160\" height=\"164\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3050\" \/><\/a>operation, Knapp lost his right foot and part of his lower leg to diabetes. His insurance doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t come close to covering his expenses. A group of musicians and Knapp admirers spearheaded by saxophonist and composer Steve Griggs has organized a campaign to ease Knapp\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s financial burden. Their goal is $30,000. The concert Wednesday evening will be at the Triple Door in downtown Seattle as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival. The fund-raising sponsors have also set up a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jimknappmusic.com\/donate\/\"target=\"_blank\">donation website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Knapp\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s musical activities have been concentrated in the Pacific Northwest, but the influence of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jim-Knapp\/e\/B000ARC4VQ?_encoding=UTF8&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"target=\"_blank\">three brilliant albums<\/a> has reached far beyond that region to affect other composers and arrangers, including Jim McNeely and Myra Melford. He established the music program at Seattle\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cornish College of the Arts 40 years ago and continues to teach there.
