A Cognac For Albam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here are a couple of anecdotes from Bill Crow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Band Room\u00e2\u20ac\u009d column in the October <em>Allegro<\/em>, the New York Local 802 newspaper of the American Federation of Musicians.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>     Ron Mills, while fronting a combo at a dance in Chicago, was approached by a couple of dancers. The husband asked, with an earnest look, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Do you play a lot of songs in the key of F. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the key I dance best to.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The wife nodded in agreement. As the night progressed, Ron couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see any difference in their dancing whether the band was in F or D-flat, but he scrupulously announced the key whenever they were in F, and the couple eagerly took the floor on those tunes. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d forgotten that I gave Bill this one.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Reminiscing with me via e-mail about the late Manny Albam, Doug Ramsey told me:<\/p>\n<p><p>     We met by chance one night at the Village Vanguard because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Albam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Albam.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Albam\" width=\"100\" height=\"91\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3001\" \/><\/a>joint was full, and Max Gordon installed me at Manny\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s table. I bought Manny a drink. Years later, in California, I wound up at a table with Manny, Bob Brookmeyer, Herb Geller, and their wives, and Bill Perkins. It had been at least 15 years since I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d seen Manny, but he remembered me. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You bought me a cognac,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve never forgotten that.
