It was on WNYC Radio&#8217;s <em>Soundcheck<\/em> program. The discussion included calls from listeners with intelligent observations. You&#8217;ll be able to hear the whole hour or choose individual segments.<br \/>\nFollowing our get-together, John brought on Judy Kaye and Donald Corren, stars of the Broadway play <a href=\"http:\/\/www.souvenironbroadway.com\/\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Souvenir<\/em><\/a>, which tells the story of the classical diva (ahem) Florence Foster Jenkins, likely the worst singer ever to maintain a career. We hear clips of Jenkins&#8217; caterwauling and a live performance of Judy Kaye approximating it. There is a priceless sketch from the play in which Corren, as accompanist Cosme McMoon, attempts to teach Madame Jenkins to syncopate &#8220;Crazy Rhythm.&#8221; Florence Foster Jenkins was awful to the point of unintentional comedy, but she loved to sing and her sincerity was touching.  All of that is probably why her recordings, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;path=tg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB000003F97%2Fqid%3D1134165529%2Fsr%3D2-1%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_b_2_1%3Fv%3Dglance%2526s%3Dmusic\"target=\"_blank\">including this one<\/a>, still sell like hotcakes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Schaefer, Drew McManus and I had a good time addressing the proposition: to applaud or not to applaud.
