Well, we are now. The resident rose expert around here informed me the other day that two famous roses are named in honor of Louis<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Sam-McGredy.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Sam-McGredy.jpeg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Sam McGredy\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Sam-McGredy.jpeg 120w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Sam-McGredy-70x70.jpg 70w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Sam-McGredy-110x110.jpg 110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 120px) 100vw, 120px\" \/><\/a> Armstrong. The same breeder developed both of them. His name is Sam McGredy (pictured), an Irishman who moved to New Zealand more than 40 years ago.  Among rose aficionados around the world he became famous for his hybrids. McGredy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Satchmo\u00e2\u20ac\u009d rose came first, in 1970. According to Stirling Macoboy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2F0810994100%3Fpf_rd_p%3D486539851%26pf_rd_s%3Dlpo-top-stripe-1%26pf_rd_t%3D201%26pf_rd_i%3D0810939207%26pf_rd_m%3DATVPDKIKX0DER%26pf_rd_r%3D1WS1NHR10K8GBFA0337Z&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"target=\"_blank\">The Ultimate Rose Book<\/a>, experts admire it \u00e2\u20ac\u0153for its bright scarlet color, its shapely clusters of double flowers and its freedom of bloom.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Satchmo-Rose-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Satchmo-Rose-21.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Satchmo Rose 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2549\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nMcGredy is reported to believe that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Satchmo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00e2\u20ac\u009d 1977 hybrid offspring, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Trumpeter,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d also named in tribute to Armstrong, supersedes its parent. Again quoting Macoboy, the flowers \u00e2\u20ac\u0153are only slightly scented, but they are borne in great abundance and hold their jazzy color until they drop, without fading, burning or turning purple.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d You may read into those qualities whatever metaphorical significance pleases you.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/trumpeter-rose1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/trumpeter-rose1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"trumpeter rose\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2550\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nNow, to the main event. You knew this was coming, right? It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Louis and the<br \/>\nAll-Stars on tour in Europe. Oddly, this seems to be the only video of Armstrong performing one of his biggest hits. For reasons not explained, less than two minutes in still photos take over and the performance ends abruptly at 3:18.
