During a break, I said to him, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I wonder why you haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t written something for this band.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153So do I,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n<p>To my knowledge, Albam never did write for the Jones-Lewis band. I wish that he had. He created wonderful music for lots of other people, though. It has always puzzled me that he wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t better known outside of the tight jazz circles of New York and Los Angeles. Nine years following his death, he remains one of the most respected composer-arranger craftsmen of the last half of the 20th century. If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not familiar with Albam, his classic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FBlues-Everybodys-Business-Manny-Alban%2Fdp%2FB000A0BC1G%3Fs%3Dmusic%26ie%3DUTF8%26qid%3D1303071877%26sr%3D1-5&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"target=\"_blank\">The Blues is Everybody\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Business<\/a> (1957) is a fine place to start. <\/p>\n<p>On tonight\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s installment of <i>Jazz From the Archives<\/i> on Newark, New Jersey\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s WBGO-FM, Bill Kirchner will play some of the great variety of music Albam made in his last decade. The program will be streamed live on the web. Here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Bill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s preview:  <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Manny Albam (1922-2001) was one of NYC&#8217;s busiest recording composer-arrangers in the 1950s and &#8217;60s.
