He died in 1996 at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Mulligan1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Mulligan1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Mulligan\" width=\"110\" height=\"118\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2492\" \/><\/a> the age of 68. There are many contexts in which to remember Mulligan&#151;as a precocious teenaged arranger for Tommy Tucker, Elliott Lawrence and Gene Krupa; one of the key figures in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FComplete-Birth-Cool-Miles-Davis%2Fdp%2FB000006Q6B%3Fs%3Dmusic%26ie%3DUTF8%26qid%3D1302117684%26sr%3D1-3&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Birth of the Cool<\/em> recordings<\/a>; the leader of groups from quartets to big bands; a writer who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FContemporary-Concepts-Stan-Kenton%2Fdp%2FB000093U3X%3Fs%3Dmusic%26ie%3DUTF8%26qid%3D1302118417%26sr%3D1-1&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"target=\"_blank\">made the Stan Kenton band swing<\/a>; and, of course, a splendid baritone saxophonist.
