I had a seen transcript of this before but never heard the interview. Rare and wonderful! Thought you might like to know &#8211; might be worth piece in <em>Rifftides.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It might, indeed. In the spring of 1954, Desmond and Charlie Parker were guests on John McLellan&#8217;s radio program on WHDH, Boston. In two previous shows, McLellan hadn&#8217;t been able to get much out of Parker. This time, Desmond gently hijacked the interview and Bird opened up to him. In a letter to his friend Jimmy Lyons, quoted in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parksidepublications.com\/takefive.html\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Take Five: The Public and Private Lives of Paul Desmond<\/em><\/a>, Desmond wrote, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know whether it was professional courtesy or the half-pint of bourbon, but old Charlie talked up a storm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"440\" height=\"355\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/T3W8Ff_4oFg?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/T3W8Ff_4oFg?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"440\" height=\"355\"><\/embed><\/object><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\nA year later, at the age of 34, Charlie Parker was dead.
