A master of backlighting in smoky atmospheres, and of meticulous darkroom wizardry, Leonard photographed<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/Dexter%20Wall%20Shot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Dexter Wall Shot.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/assets_c\/2010\/08\/Dexter Wall Shot-thumb-200x179-16910.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"179\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;\" \/><\/a> images that caught the mood of music-making by some of the most significant jazz artists of the 20th century. Leonard lived and worked in New Orleans for more than a decade until Hurricane Katrina ruined his house and studio and he moved to L.A.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/assets_c\/2010\/08\/H. The picture was widely known as an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FBallads-Dexter-Gordon%2Fdp%2FB000005HH6%2F&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"target=\"_blank\">album cover<\/a>, but like much of Leonard&#8217;s early work created for utilitarian purposes, it took on larger fame as a symbol of the spirit of jazz, and as a collectors&#8217; treasure.<br \/>\nHerman Leonard, RIP.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Herman Leonard died last Saturday in Los Angeles at 87.
