He was 76. Born Robert Patterson, Ali became a disciple and close colleague <span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/Rashied%20Ali.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rashied Ali.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/assets_c\/2009\/08\/Rashied Ali-thumb-143x169-9244.jpg\" width=\"143\" height=\"169\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;\" \/><\/a><\/span>of his fellow Philadelphian John Coltrane. He played on some of the most uninhibited recordings of Coltrane&#8217;s final years, including the astonishing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FInterstellar-Space-John-Coltrane%2Fdp%2FB00004TA41&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Interstellar Space<\/em><\/a>, a series of free duets. I was on a selection committee for Grammy nominations in 1974, the year Impulse! Records released <em>Interstellar Space<\/em>. Pianist Billy Taylor, one of the other members of the committee, said during the listening session, &#8220;I can&#8217;t imagine two people making more music than that.&#8221; It was a tour de force for both musicians.
