Here&#8217;s the answer from a posting in the early days of <em>Rifftides<\/em>, July 12, 2005.<br \/>\n<strong><big>Name That Blog<\/big><\/strong><br \/>\nNow that you ask, the name <em>Rifftide<\/em>s was inspired by a 1945 Coleman Hawkins piece, &#8220;Rifftide.&#8221; The tune was part of the celebrated 1945 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fexec%2Fobidos%2FASIN%2FB000005HF8%2Fqid%3D1121131242%2Fsr%3D11-1%2F&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Hollywood Stampede<\/em><\/a> session that included trumpeter Howard McGhee, one of the bebop kiddies Hawk nurtured. Thelonious Monk had played with Hawkins the year before. Monk later recorded the tune and called it &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fexec%2Fobidos%2Ftg%2Fdetail%2F-%2FB00006GO8Q%2Fqid%3D1121145663%2Fsr%3D1-38%3Fv%3Dglance%26s%3Dmusic&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325\"target=\"_blank\">Hackensack<\/a>&#8221; Either way, it&#8217;s based on the harmonic structure of &#8220;Oh, Lady Be Good,&#8221; but copyright law doesn&#8217;t cover chord changes, and George Gershwin&#8217;s estate earned no royalties.
