The phrase is &#8220;if you will.&#8221; Just now on a news program, an economic spokesman for one of the US presidential candidates (which one doesn&#8217;t matter; this is not a political comment) said, &#8220;if you will&#8221; nine times in the course of a ten-minute interview. In not one of those instances did &#8220;if you will&#8221; clarify, explain or inform. It only muddied understanding and interrupted thought. I think that I&#8217;ll adopt the practice of a friend. Whenever someone he&#8217;s speaking with says, &#8220;if you will,&#8221; he interrupts with, &#8220;I won&#8217;t.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 20px 20px 0px\" height=\"115\" alt=\"She Literally Exploded.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/She%20Literally%20Exploded.jpg\" width=\"115\" \/><\/span>Two editors of <em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em> in London have corraled several hundred language misusages and obfuscations&nbsp;into a delightful little volume titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FShe-Literally-Exploded-Christopher-Howse%2Fdp%2F1845296753%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1217392254%26sr%3D1-4&amp;tag=rifftidougram-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\"><em>She Literally Exploded: The Daily Telegraph Infuriating Phrasebook<\/em>. <\/a>Sample entries:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>They, them, their<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Instead of <em>he, him, his\/she, her<\/em>. A failure of pronouns to agree with verbs is a glaring grammatical error, but is embraced to avoid specifying sex: <em>The caller withheld their number<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Basis<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Used to form a cumbersome adverbial phrase instead of an adverb: <em>on a daily basis<\/em>, instead of <em>daily<\/em>; <em>on a voluntary basis<\/em>, instead of <em>voluntarily<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concerns&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <em>After the stabbing, teachers&#8217; representatives voiced concerns over classroom discipline.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a plea for abandonment of an irritant that infests the English language.
