They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re still coming. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time to call some of them to your attention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Kristing-Korb-Digipak-1-e1544464285782.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10784\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Kristing-Korb-Digipak-1-e1544464285782.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"404\" \/><\/a>From her assertive opening bass statement, Kristin Korb, her trio and an intriguing guest soloist set a high standard for 2018 holiday jazz. Their album is more than an hour of classic songs balanced with less familiar ones. As ever in her bass playing, Ms. Korb\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Ray Brown lineage is apparent as she provides the trio\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s strongly felt and heard foundation. She tempers the softness of her singing with phrasing and bluesy note treatments that emphasize the extent of her immersion in the modern jazz tradition. Nowhere are those attributes more evident than in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Santa Baby,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the sultry song that Eartha Kitt made a hit in the early 1950s. For this album Ms. Korb adds another young Dane to her established trio with pianist Magnus Hjorth and drummer Snorre Kirk. Mathias Heise\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s harmonica virtuosity is leading jazz observers in Europe and elsewhere to mention him as a successor to the late Toots Thielemans. His work with the group he calls the Mathias Heise Quadrillion have come in for extensive critical praise.<\/p>\n<p>Fast tempos intimidate Heise no more than they do Ms. Korb. On Irving Berlin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for example, she scats to a faretheewell with no evidence of strain. Following Hjorth\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lightning piano solo, Heise and leader perform a series of unison voice-harmonica riffs, then they exchange breaks with drummer Kirk. She finishes the song sounding relaxed despite the rapid pace, and the trio ends the track with an emphatic\u00e2\u20ac\u201deven emphatic\u00e2\u20ac\u201d chord. With Korb and company, not all is excitement; far from it. They take another treasured holiday standard for a leisurely stroll. Well, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leisurely except that the stroll through \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Winter Wonderland\u00e2\u20ac\u009d has drummer Kirk chattering rhythmically in the background, as if he were indicating points of interest along the snowy path.<\/p>\n<p>Among the ballads, Vince Guaraldi\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Christmas Time Is Here\u00e2\u20ac\u009d stands out for the nostalgia in Ms. Korb\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s delivery of Lee Mendelson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lyric from a treasured 1965 Christmas television film populated by Charles Schultz\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <em>Peanuts<\/em> characters. She uses Dave Frishberg\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s soothing melody and lyric of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Snowbound\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for an effective bit of romantic storytelling and clever scatting that leads to equally incisive solos by Hjorth and Heise. Ms. Korb and the rhythm section take great advantage of the harmonies of the French traditional hymn \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Angels We Have Heard On High,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in which Heise\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s harmonica expands on the exuberance in the bossa nova rhythmic pattern of Kirk\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s drumming. Korb\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bass solo and her bass line behind Hjorth\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s piano and Heise\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s harmonica solos are the high points of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We Three Kings.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Korb calls on Irving Berlin for a second time. Slow, reflective and delivered with vocal purity, her \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Count Your Blessings (Instead Of Sheep)\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is as affecting as when Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney first sang it in the 1954 film <em>White Christmas<\/em>. This Christmas album is a joy.<\/p>\n<p>As it was being issued, no doubt by coincidence a video popped up on the internet of Korb and the quartet with the song that was to become the new album\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s first track.
