In thirteen ballads dealing with after-hours life and culture, the pair\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s intimate collaboration makes this a highlight among 2018 vocal albums. Luxion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s participation means that it is also an important recording for listeners who cherish fine piano playing. His keyboard touch and inventive harmonic transitions have Ms. van Nuis floating through a program that includes classics like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You And The Night And The Music,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d old songs like Ruth Etting\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 1931 hit \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Moonlight Saving Time\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and newer classics including Henry Mancini\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Dreamsville\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and his lesser known \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Shadows Of Paris.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The two are distinctive in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Black Coffee,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d which is delicious for Ms. van Nuis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 bluesy bending of the words \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Around\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and the song\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ending title phrase. She gives Meredith d\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Ambrosio\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Piano Player (A Thousand And One Saloons)\u00e2\u20ac\u009d just the right blend of sadness and wit. Throughout, she sustains long notes perfectly in tune, supported by Luxion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s flawless accompaniment. The audience at Chicago\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s PianoForte piano store applauds with not so much as one whoop, holler or look-at-me histrionics of the kind that spoils so many live recordings.
