Now, I want to propose the notion of &#8220;molecular piano.&#8221; I&#8217;m thinking of &#8220;molecular gastronomy&#8221; as practiced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elbulli.com\/\">Ferran Adri\u00e0<\/a> and many others (focusing on ambiguities and subtle transformations &#8212; from one state of edible matter to another). And, I am thinking too of the study of <a href=\"http:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/catalog\/item\/default.asp?tid=8587&amp;ttype=2\">&#8220;microsound.&#8221;<\/a> The origins of &#8220;molecular&#8221; piano music (&#8220;granular&#8221; piano music?) surely date to the 1970s: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmich.edu\/music\/faculty\/faculty_pages\/som_fac_curtissmithc.html\">Curtis Curtis-Smith<\/a>&#8216;s Rhapsodies for bowed piano, William Duckworth&#8217;s <em>Time Curve Preludes<\/em>, <span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/pianomorphosis\/keyboardAJ.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-left alignleft\" style=\"float: left; margin: 20px 40px 100px 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/pianomorphosis\/assets_c\/2009\/06\/keyboardAJ-thumb-140x65-7668.jpg\" alt=\"keyboardAJ.jpg\" width=\"140\" height=\"65\" \/><\/a><\/span>and probably George Crumb&#8217;s <em>Makrokosmos<\/em>.
