Four years ago this summer, I started playing and hearing music at the club (the former <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Village_Gate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Village Gate<\/a>). It&#8217;s not overstatement to say that LPR has reflected, and also played a role in big changes in American musical life.<\/p>\n<p>The range of people who stop by is crazy. After I played in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/sandow\/2008\/11\/seeing_the_future.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a performance of the <em>Quartet for the End of Time<\/em><\/a>, Nico Muhly&#8217;s mother introduced herself. One night it was Chuck Close, another night Mrs. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earle_Brown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Earle Brown<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Duckworth_(composer)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Duckworth<\/a>, Marian Seldes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>To mark the first anniversary of the club on June 15, 2009, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/17\/arts\/music\/17rouge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I played a CD release event for my recording of Duckworth&#8217;s <em>Time Curve Preludes<\/em><\/a>. At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/01\/31\/arts\/music\/early-birthday-party-for-philip-glass-at-le-poisson-rouge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philip Glass&#8217;s 75th-birthday party<\/a>, I played with Tim Fain. At LPR, I did <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110102021319\/http:\/\/www.wqxr.org\/articles\/q2-live-concerts\/2010\/oct\/13\/bruce-brubaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the first New York performance of Nico Muhly&#8217;s <em>Drones &amp; Piano<\/em><\/a>. With Francesco Tristano, I played <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wqxr.org\/story\/115995-bruce-brubaker-and-francesco-tristano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an overlapping performance of classical and newer piano pieces we called &#8220;Simultaneo&#8221;<\/a> that seemed to rile the techno experts even more than the classicos in the audience.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve heard amazing sounds at LPR: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052748704104104575622842549966642\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Glenn Branca&#8217;s battalion of electric guitars<\/a>, the <em>Rite of Spring<\/em>, rearranged, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2018\/03\/the-original-noise-artist-hear-the-strange-experimental-sounds-instruments-of-italian-futurist-luigi-russolo-1913.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reconstructions of Russolo&#8217;s instruments<\/a>, Gavin Bryars&#8217; <em>Sinking of the Titanic<\/em>, on the night of the 100th anniversary of the boat&#8217;s demise.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/10\/14\/salsa-and-jazz-back-at-the-village-gate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2208 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 1px 19px 5px 0px\" title=\"LPRGlassClose\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/pianomorphosis\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/LPRGlassClose.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/pianomorphosis\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/LPRGlassClose.jpg 311w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/pianomorphosis\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/LPRGlassClose-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/a>I played on shows or double bills that included performances by Max Richter, Sylvain Chauveau, the Kronos Quartet, <a href=\"http:\/\/ashleymacisaac.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ashley MacIsaac<\/a>&#8230; At LPR, I met writers that wanted to write about me, and photographers who took my pic.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to Justin, David, and Ronen!
