I edit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rad.org.uk\/more\/dance-gazette\">Dance Gazette<\/a>, the magazine of the Royal Academy of Dance. I\u2019m also a lifelong Londoner:\u00a0it\u2019s the perfect\u00a0city for connecting to art forms\u00a0that\u00a0both\u00a0look back and spring forward.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Writing on the arts began as a sideline, while I wasn\u2019t finishing\u00a0an unfinished PhD. Many of my jobs were remarkably poorly paid. Some weren\u2019t quite me \u2013 editing the movie section\u00a0for a glossy mag where the editor sighed that the Nazis had a great look was something of a low.<\/p>\n<p>I have also written for marvellous editors on magazines that are wonderfully committed to their subject, including Literary Review, Dancing Times and Sight &amp; Sound. And I graduated to grown-up papers: the Sunday Times, Financial Times, Observer and Guardian in the UK, plus occasional work for the\u00a0Washington Post and Toronto Globe &amp; Mail.<\/p>\n<p>I also edit stuff too \u2013 lots of theatre programmes in the past, and currently Dance Gazette. Making discoveries, encountering new artists and works, discussing subjects with enthusiasts and drawing on their enthusiasm \u2013 it\u2019s been a continuing, enlivening education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am a writer and critic on performance, books and film and currently write for, among others, the Sunday Times and the Guardian.
