Long-time\u00a0<em>Life&#8217;s a Pitch\u00a0<\/em>readers (hi Mom) may remember that <a title=\"Life's a Pitch\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/2009\/01\/small_world_isnt_it\/\" target=\"_blank\">I was there<\/a>\u00a0the day Patti LuPone stopped a performance of\u00a0<em>Gypsy\u00a0<\/em>just after she began &#8220;Rose&#8217;s Turn&#8221; because someone was taking pictures. The audience applauded; I was appalled.<\/p>\n<p>Zimerman had every right to stop a solo recital. I would argue that LuPone did not have the right to stop a musical, because she was playing a character and had several off-stage opportunities to ask someone to have the photographer removed from the theater.<\/p>\n<p>Zimerman\u00a0may, however, have overstated the point here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On returning, he told the audience that he had lost many recording projects and contracts because music managers had told him: &#8220;We&#8217;re sorry, that has already been on YouTube.&#8221; &#8220;The destruction of music because of YouTube is enormous,&#8221; he added<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are a lot of pianists on YouTube, it&#8217;s true: playing a diverse repertoire, often filmed without their permission:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"560\" height=\"315\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/g_Rq9uwF4k8?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed width=\"560\" height=\"315\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/g_Rq9uwF4k8?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pianist Krystian Zimerman reportedly\u00a0left a performance last week because someone was filming him on their smartphone.
