And the films basically have the same title.<\/p>\n<p>The first is\u00a0<em><a title=\"A Late Quartet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1226240\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Late Quartet<\/a><\/em>, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman (!) and Christopher Walken (!). \u00a0It chronicles the &#8220;Fugue String Quartet&#8221; as they learn of their cellist&#8217;s Parkinson&#8217;s disease diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Description, from <a title=\"A Late Quartet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.westendfilms.com\/films\/current\/late-quartet\" target=\"_blank\">West End Films<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The four members of a world-renowned string quartet struggle to stay together in the face of death, competing egos and insuppressible lust.<\/p>\n<p>Set in iconic New York City, this is the story of four musicians, bound together by their passion for music and long years of working together. But when their patriarch Peter is diagnosed with a terminal illness, the repercussions hit the group deeper than they could imagine. First and second violinists Robert and Daniel row over first chair, Robert and violist Juliette&#8217;s marriage hits the rocks when he has an affair, and their headstrong daughter embarks on her own explosive affair &#8211; with Daniel.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And the trailer:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NX66lRnNmqs?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t you have the urge to play the\u00a0<em>solo part<\/em> every once in a while?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At least we&#8217;ll have some excellent movie review quotes about string quartets.\u00a0<a title=\"Huffington Post\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/09\/11\/a-late-quartet_n_1873414.html\" target=\"_blank\">The<em>\u00a0Huffington Post<\/em><\/a>\u00a0has already written &#8220;the drones of dead baroque composers&#8221; (drones? Baroque?) and &#8220;Beethoven&#8217;s &#8216;Opus 131&#8242;&#8221; with &#8220;Opus 131&#8221; in quotes for reasons we can&#8217;t figure out. Like,\u00a0allegedly\u00a0that&#8217;s what it is? &#8220;<em>Or so he says&#8221;?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Christopher Walken <a title=\"Wall Street Journal\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/canadarealtime\/2012\/09\/13\/speakeasy-christopher-walken-would-rather-nap-than-practice-the-cello\/\" target=\"_blank\">didn&#8217;t really learn to play the cello<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>A Late Quartet\u00a0<\/em>comes out in the US on November 2, 2012. The score is by\u00a0Angelo Badalamenti, and it seems Decca is <a title=\"A Late Quartet CD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.deccarecords.com\/artist\/releases\/release.aspx?pid=64277&amp;aid=96822\" target=\"_blank\">releasing the soundtrack<\/a> which features the Brentano String Quartet\u00a0playing &#8220;Opus 131&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/2012\/10\/you-cant-leave-the-quartet-man\/mi0003449934\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-964\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-964\" title=\"MI0003449934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MI0003449934.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MI0003449934.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MI0003449934-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MI0003449934-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MI0003449934-70x70.jpeg 70w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/MI0003449934-110x110.jpeg 110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The next film,\u00a0<em>Quartet,<\/em> not early or late, is about four retired opera singers. Not to be defeated by the A-list cast of\u00a0<em>A Late Quartet<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Quartet\u00a0<\/em>stars the Dowager Countess and Dumbledore, and is directed by Dustin Hoffman. The retirement home has an annual concert to celebrate Verdi&#8217;s birthday (it&#8217;s a Verdi year!), but opera star Maggie Smith shows up and\u00a0<em>turns the place upside-down\u00a0<\/em>or something. Then, they have to do a gala concert to save the home. Do homes for only musicians exist?
