{"id":441,"date":"2010-03-18T11:12:17","date_gmt":"2010-03-18T11:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/wp\/?p=441"},"modified":"2010-03-18T11:12:17","modified_gmt":"2010-03-18T11:12:17","slug":"dear_clients_im_sorry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/2010\/03\/dear_clients_im_sorry\/","title":{"rendered":"Dear Clients: I&#8217;m sorry&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;you&#8217;re being overcharged. <\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/18\/arts\/music\/18benefit.html\">today&#8217;s <i>New York Times<\/i><\/a>, we learned that less than $8,000 from Lang Lang and Wyclef Jean&#8217;s fundraiser for Haiti at Carnegie Hall <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carnegiehall.org\/article\/box_office\/events\/evt_13831.html?selecteddate=03212010\">this Sunday<\/a> will actually go to disaster relief, and not just because some of it will go to <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/5492081\/wyclef-jean-paid-his-mistress-105000-through-his-haiti-charity\">Wyclef&#8217;s mistress<\/a>. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Even if the event&#8217;s nearly $200,000 worth of tickets sell out, less<br \/>\nthan $8,000 from the sales will go to the cause. The concert, though,<br \/>\nis expected to raise some money, thanks mainly to a $50,000 subsidy by<br \/>\nthe Montblanc company and $10,000 by CAMI Music, the concert&#8217;s<br \/>\npresenter and Mr. Lang&#8217;s management agency. Montblanc had promised to<br \/>\nhelp pay for the concert well before it was transformed into a benefit,<br \/>\na decision made at Mr. Lang&#8217;s request. The performers, including Mr.<br \/>\nLang, are waiving their fees.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The more important morsel from this article, at least for the purposes of a classical music PR blog, is that there appears to be a publicist out there willing to handle the press for a major Carnegie Hall fundraiser for a $70 fee:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"70DollarPressRep.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/lifesapitch\/70DollarPressRep.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" height=\"213\" width=\"500\" \/>$70 for a press representative? To&#8230;stand in the lobby and hand out press tickets for a half hour? To&#8230;write part of a press release? To&#8230;click &#8220;send&#8221; on a pre-written press release? $52,000 in ads and $70 on a publicist? And then there&#8217;s this amazing line at the end the paragraph: &#8220;Some costs are estimates, the presenters emphasized, and could be less.&#8221;&nbsp; Less?? Who is this publicist?
