She\u00c2\u00a0asked if I would be willing to Skype into the seminar to answer a few questions about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jumper\/2015\/01\/approaching-beauty-in-a-business-school\/\">beauty class<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0Since the time difference made this impossible, I suggested that she\u00c2\u00a0email me a few questions and I answer them on a video, which could be played during class.\u00c2\u00a0Here are the questions the student\u00c2\u00a0sent me (with the times on the video where you can find my responses).<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>What was it like for the beauty class students to begin to spend time with artwork? <\/strong>(00:00-04:55)<\/li>\n<li><strong>How did you measure success in the class? <\/strong>(4:55-7:22)<\/li>\n<li><strong>For students wanting to become arts administrators, is there anything in particular you wanted them to understand or know? <\/strong>(7:23-9:05)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Did you talk with your students about cultural policy? <\/strong>(9:06-10:33)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Would you agree that the Beauty Class offers a new, more beautiful framework for improvement to the role of an ethics course? <\/strong>(10:34-13:38)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The video is rather informal but I thought I would share it on Jumper\u00c2\u00a0as (1)\u00c2\u00a0I imagine\u00c2\u00a0both the Qs and As could\u00c2\u00a0be interesting to other students of art\/arts administration; and (2)\u00c2\u00a0I am always delighted to hear from students who have read a post or two on Jumper and want to ask questions or debate ideas&#8211;and I want others to feel encouraged to reach out to me.<\/p>\n<p>After the class, the student who contacted\u00c2\u00a0me kindly\u00c2\u00a0wrote a followup email and mentioned that this had been\u00c2\u00a0the last seminar before a month of papers and presentations.\u00c2\u00a0She then said, &#8220;There was a really wonderful several minutes near the end, where students volunteered and shared what beauty and aesthetics mean to them individually, inspired by conversation after your video.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sounds like an great\u00c2\u00a0way to end a term!\u00c2\u00a0Many thanks to the students of Arts Organizations in Society at SAIC for the opportunity to consider these questions and to be part of your class.<\/p>\n<p>The whole video runs just under\u00c2\u00a015 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aXq3WgrDPfY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_auto_sidebar]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I received an email from a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, preparing for a seminar on Arts Organizations in Society.
