King<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0played coy at the 25th annual Chicago Blues Festival last weekend. &#8220;I won&#8217;t say what party I&#8217;m for,&#8221; the great vocalist and guitarist began, in obvious reference to local resident Barack Obama&#8217;s ascension to Democratic presidential nominee, &#8220;but everybody has something to be happy about now. Including the women &#8212; who found out <a href=\"http:\/\/my.barackobama.com\/page\/content\/semr?source=SEM-register-google-obama-search-national\">&#8216;Yes, we can!<\/a>&#8216;&#8221; Few other of the hundreds of performers were even that explicit onstage, but the fest reportedly drew 750,000 listeners over four days, and the music projected a general air of triumph against daunting odds.<\/p>\n<div><br class=\"webkit-block-placeholder\" \/><\/div>\n<div><br class=\"webkit-block-placeholder\" \/><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nMaybe it was the fact that the crowds appeared\u00c2\u00a0on the fest&#8217;s last day despite major thunderstorms\u00c2\u00a0to hear B.B., an 82-year-old diabetic who still sings with affecting power and can wrench a thrilling sound from the pluck of a single note on his guitar <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lucille-B-B-King\/dp\/B000002OJJ\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213276136&amp;sr=1-1\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Lucille<\/a>. Or the roaring squall of\u00c2\u00a064-year-old albino\u00c2\u00a0guitarist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Johnny-Winter\/dp\/B00023GGFI\/ref=pd_sim_m_img_2\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Johnny Winter<\/a>, frail looking though he is,\u00c2\u00a0joined by 73-year-old harmonicaist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Baby-Dont-You-Tear-Clothes\/dp\/B00022FWQ8\/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213276418&amp;sr=1-11?tag=howardmacom-20\">James Cotton<\/a>. Or the\u00c2\u00a0soaring sound of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Get-Wild-Lil-Blues-Imperials\/dp\/B00000JCPV\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213276544&amp;sr=1-3\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Lil&#8217; Ed and\u00c2\u00a0the Blues Imperials<\/a>, cavorting \u00c2\u00a0on Grant Park&#8217;s Petrillo Music Shell stage. The moxy of returned-from-retirement <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Boogie-Blues-Bounce-Modern-Recordings\/dp\/B0009OBZ0G\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213276781&amp;sr=1-3\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Little Willie Littlefield<\/a>, 77, entertaining a huge audience with only boogie-woogie piano stylings and voice in a tradition that dates back to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Library-Congress-Recordings-Jelly-Morton\/dp\/B000LXHGHG\/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213276901&amp;sr=1-8\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Jelly Roll Morton<\/a>. The warmly seductive style of guitarist-singer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Youll-Lose-Good-Thing-Barbara\/dp\/B000J4OY4K\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213276958&amp;sr=1-1\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Barbara Lynn<\/a>; the antics of ageless<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Classic-Sugar-Pie-Desanto\/dp\/B000005NMF\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213277029&amp;sr=1-2\/?tag=howardmacom-20\"> Sugar Pie De Santo<\/a>, whose silver lam\u00c3\u00a9 beret stayed on her head as she ended a song with somersaults, the heartfelt wail of guitarist-singer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/North-South-Jimmy-Johnson\/dp\/B00001IVA2\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213277074&amp;sr=1-3\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Jimmy Johnson<\/a>, the mellow retro vibe of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Recapturing-Banjo-Otis-Taylor\/dp\/B0010VD7FS\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213277131&amp;sr=1-1\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Otis Taylor<\/a> with a troupe including New Orleans\u00c2\u00a0banjoist\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M0_NjBbh0C8\">Don Vappe<\/a>, the duck-walk and behind-the-head guitar-picking of elegantly white-suited <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/West-Side-Strut-Eddy-Clearwater\/dp\/B0012IWI5E\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213277332&amp;sr=1-1\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Eddy &#8220;The Chief&#8221; Clearwater<\/a>. The hard-work ethic embodied by harmonicaist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blues-Keep-Following-Me-Around\/dp\/B000001EEC\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213277536&amp;sr=1-1\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Billy Branch<\/a>, performing both at the fest and afterwards at the Blues Heaven Foundation, set up by the late Willie Dixon at the old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluesaccess.com\/No_36\/chess.html\">Chess Records Studios<\/a>. The idea that an overwhelmingly white yet all-ages audience embraces the bedrock grit and proud gumption of America&#8217;s African diaspora culture.<\/p>\n<div><br class=\"webkit-block-placeholder\" \/><\/div>\n<div>Whatever the reasons, there was little hint of blues fatalism at the Chicago blues fest, but rather a feeling of triumph. That may have been momentary: No denying the blues musicians don&#8217;t every weekend enjoy the attentions of vast audiences milling around six free stages and a talks-tent (at which I moderated a discussion on the broad legacy of centenarian singer-songwriter-bandleader-alto saxist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Saturday-Night-Fish-Fry-Original\/dp\/B00004RBUC\/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213278263&amp;sr=8-3\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Louis Jordan<\/a>, with his widow Martha, AACM saxophonist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Messenger-Live-Original-Velvet-Lounge\/dp\/B000FCUYRC\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213278557&amp;sr=1-1\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Ernest Dawkins<\/a>, guitarist-singer-songwriter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Deluxe-Lonnie-Brooks\/dp\/B000000A1Z\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=music&amp;qid=1213278609&amp;sr=1-3\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Lonnie Brooks<\/a>, author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Swing-Annotated-History-Bill-Milkowski\/dp\/0756762596\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1213278695&amp;sr=1-2\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Bill Milkowski <\/a>and record producer-broadcaster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybluesandjazz.org\/eblues\/bobporternight.htm\">Bob Porter<\/a>). But among the many lessons of the blues is when good times arrive, grab &#8217;em.
