{"id":931,"date":"2012-06-07T11:11:49","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T15:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/?p=931"},"modified":"2019-09-12T18:56:57","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T22:56:57","slug":"jazz-andor-free-new-york-city-summer-music-festivals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2012\/06\/jazz-andor-free-new-york-city-summer-music-festivals.html","title":{"rendered":"Jazz and\/or free New York City summer music festivals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love the conjunction of &#8220;free,&#8221; &#8220;jazz,&#8221; &#8220;festivals,&#8221; &#8220;summer&#8221; and &#8220;New York City&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0&#8212; though not all free fests are jazz, and not all jazz fests are free (in either of two senses of the word).<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the<a href=\"http:\/\/artsforart.org\/event\/visionfestival17\/schedule\"> 17th Vision Festival<\/a>, which I write up in <a href=\"http:\/\/cityarts.info\/2012\/06\/05\/expressivity-now\/\">my CityArts-New York column<\/a>, has some free shows, and can be aesthetically linked to &#8220;free jazz,&#8221; but the concerts (for the first time at <a href=\"http:\/\/roulette.org\/\">Roulette<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0in Brooklyn) do have admission charges. Then there&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/bluenotejazzfestival.com\/category\/events\/2012-06\">the Blue Note Jazz Festival 2012<\/a>, June 10 &#8211; 30, performances at the Blue Note, Highline Ballroom, B.B. King&#8217;s, the Henry Street Settlement and the Apollo Theater all requiring tickets, and most of the music quite structured &#8212; but including one bona fide visitation of a 1960s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Complete-Africa-Brass-Sessions\/dp\/B000VHIVCG\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Free Jazz&#8221; era classic<\/a>, John Coltrane&#8217;s suite <a href=\"http:\/\/bluenotejazzfestival.com\/2012\/04\/africabrass-mccoy-tyner-charles-tolliver-big-band-2\/\">&#8220;Africa\/Brass<\/a>,&#8221; brought to life by original pianist McCoy Tyner and the Charles Tolliver Big Band.<\/p>\n<p>I myself will pontificate freely (and for free) on a Vision Fest panel Thurs., June 14, titled, &#8220;Free Music: Why Then\/Why Now,&#8221; in the estimable company of pianist Dave Burrell, baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett, trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith, multi-instrumentalist\/composer Elliott Sharp, all moderated by Scott Currie. I&#8217;ll name three: <strong>pianist Geri Allen<\/strong> with visual artist <strong>Carrie Mae Weem<\/strong>s&#8217; &#8220;Slow Fade To Black&#8221; (with Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lyne Carrington, Lizz Wright and Patrice Rushen, among others, 8 pm,\u00c2\u00a0Friday June 15, (Celebrate Brooklyn!); \u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rivertorivernyc.com\/events\/eddie-palmieri\"><strong>Eddie Palmieri<\/strong> with his AfroCaribbean Jazz Octet <\/a>at Rockefeller Park (River to River), 7 pm, June 21; \u00c2\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityparksfoundation.org\/calendar\/orchestre-poly-rythmo-smod-bibi-tanga-the-selenites-dj-chief-boima\/\">Orchestre Poly-Rhytmo<\/a><\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0(jazzy, in the Afro-pop manner) from Benin at Summerstage, 3 pm, June 22 .<\/p>\n<p>There are more &#8212; check the schedules.
