As pres of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jjanews.org\">Jazz Journalists Association<\/a>, I&#8217;m happy to announce a four-session mini-conference on <a href=\"http:\/\/members.jazzjournalists.org\/apap2012\">Media for Audience Development <\/a>taking place (free to the public, <a href=\"http:\/\/members.jazzjournalists.org\/apap2012\">registration<\/a> requested) within the larger <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apapnyc.org\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Association of Performing Arts Presenters convention<\/a> Jan. 6 &#8211; 8 at the midtown Sheraton Hotel and Towers, followed by a panel on\u00c2\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/members.jazzjournalists.org\/cma2012\">Social Media in Practice<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chamber-music.org\/\">Chamber Music America conference<\/a> (at the Westin Hotel in Times Square) on Jan. 14.<\/p>\n<p>The JJA sessions are rather different from the\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0day-long\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/jazztimes.com\/articles\/28979-apap-nyc-and-jazztimes-collaborate-on-diy-crash-course-in-january\">DIY Crash Course<\/a>, which seems to be oriented as an overview of the jazz industry for artists, being presented by\u00c2\u00a0JazzTimes magazine on Jan. 5\u00c2\u00a0in collaboration with APAP just before its convention (same site). The JJA is focusing on how presenters and artists &#8212; not only or necessarily in jazz &#8212; can\/should use media. See\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.apapnyc.org\/\">my guest posting<\/a> on the APAP blog for details about what the JJA is doing and why we think it&#8217;s necessary.<\/p>\n<p>But in a nutshell: There&#8217;s no reaching and building audiences unless presenters and artists collaborate with journalists who are media experts (or at least, professionally proficient) to deal with how people get their information and form their interests in the arts now. Large audiences <em>are<\/em> out there &#8212; think of <a href=\"http:\/\/firstread.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2007\/12\/07\/4425062-breaking-down-oprahs-numbers\">Oprah&#8217;s reach<\/a>. Too mega for most of us, but there&#8217;s something about the relationships her vast audience \u00c2\u00a0assumes with her. Relationships, now better than ever fostered through media, is what audience-buidling is about. We believe that if we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re in contact they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll attend our events, support our productions, learn about and maybe join the ongoing discussion about the arts in our lives, which now using new technologies can have greater reach and inclusion than every before. The audience and us are one, of course. And those new technologies which we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re almost all using?
