Of five venues on the South Side,\u00c2\u00a0City Life Cocktail Lounge was my favorite. Singer June Yvon has held a weekly gig there for 19 years, and delivers bluesy, swinging, funky standards such as &#8220;What A Difference A Day Makes&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0a hit for both\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/What-Difference-Day-Makes-Original\/dp\/B001GUVBPG\/\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Dinah Washington<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/What-Difference-Day-Makes\/dp\/B0013AMZVS\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Esther Phillips<\/a>, with experienced conviction, scatting and dramatizing the lyrics, too. I video-taped her and plan to produce an eyeJAZZ clip, but my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pokempner.net\/\">Marc PoKempner<\/a>&#8216;s photo captures the tone of the place and her set. Saturday and Sunday afternoons, local stars who have world-class talent (ragtime composer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reginaldrrobinson.com\/\">Reginald Robinson<\/a>, hard-edged alto saxophonist <a href=\"http:\/\/aacmchicago.org\/ernest-dawkins-new-horizons-ensemble\">Edward Dawkins<\/a> &#8212; pictured at left &#8212; and trumpeter <a href=\"http:\/\/chicagojazzphilharmonic.org\/\">Orbert Davis<\/a> in several configurations) perform near sparkling Buckingham Fountain.<\/p>\n<p>Come evening the action moves across the Jackson Street to the Petrillo bandshell, for bills headlined by Cassandra Wilson (trumpeter Maurice Brown, Trio 3 + Geri Allen, Obert&#8217;s Jazz Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble), and Roy Hargrove (drummer Mike Reed&#8217;s Myth\/Science Assembly, multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan&#8217;s 80th birthday celebration, tenor saxist David Sanchez w\/vibist Stefon Harris). If you&#8217;re in the area and dig jazz, this free festival is where\u00c2\u00a0you want to be.
