He and associates including trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie &#8212; with whom he plays <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Clp9AeBdgL0\">&#8220;Hot House&#8221;<\/a> in one of only two filmed performances &#8211; developed the musical language that soloists in jazz, blues, better rock\/pop and improvisational music have built on ever since. You can hear bits of Bird and Diz&#8217;s influence (fellow bop originators included Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Kenny Clarke, Roy Haynes, Tadd Dameron, Charlie Christian) &#8212; dramatic, daringly harmonized pitches, slurred phrases of irregular lengths, acidic rather than sweet sound, rhythmic complexity &#8212; \u00c2\u00a0in all the acts who were to be at the scratched fests. Such as &#8212;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>V<strong>ocalist C\u00c3\u00a9cile McLorin Salvant<\/strong>, from Florida, doesn&#8217;t have a record out yet, but she won last fall&#8217;s Monk Institute competition and her sets as shown on YouTube are entertaining, steeped in classic blues. She could have kicked off the Bird fest at Harlem&#8217;s Marcus Garvey Park with a rousing old call to gather like this<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&amp;field-keywords=Bessie+Smith+Alexander%27s+Ragtime+Band&amp;x=0&amp;y=0\/?tag=howardmacom-20\"> hit for Bessie Smith<\/a> in 1927 &#8212; Irving Berlin&#8217;s &#8220;Alexander&#8217;s Ragtime Band&#8221; &#8212;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"390\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/O5Hm-Brusbs?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Then Ms. Salvant might have moved into sunny <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Miss-Brown-You-Billie-Holiday\/dp\/B0058WA49C\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">early (1935) Billie Holiday<\/a> territory with <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/hRbdqg6Br94\">&#8220;Miss Brown To You,&#8221;<\/a> or bop-redolent repertoire such as <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/t0Hldy95v_8\">All The Things You Are<\/a>, which she delivers with Sarah Vaughan panache and which Bird recorded in 1945 and again in Toronto with an all-star combo, as captured on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Quintet-Jazz-At-Massey-Hall\/dp\/B000UBVITQ\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Jazz at Massey Hall <\/a>(1952). I don&#8217;t know what she would have done to end. Something bold like\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Ir9EOtp71kQ\">her scat moment<\/a> onstage with Al Jarreau, Dianne Reeves, Kurt Elling, Dee Dee Bridgewater, guitarist Kevin Eubanks, finale of the Monk competition she won?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alto saxophonist Tia Fuller<\/strong> &amp; band up next. An exciting member of a new generation of women jazz leaders, Tia is featured\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Xez9JwNHzV4\">on tours with Beyonce<\/a>, and has learned something about presentation, check it out. She&#8217;d likely start with a tune such as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Breakthrough\/dp\/B000QMZ4D0\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Breakthrough<\/a>&#8221; from her album <em>Healing Force<\/em>, which she played at the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.jazzjournalists.org\/2010-jazz-awards\/jja-jazz-awards-2010-winners\/\">2010 JJA Jazz Awards<\/a>:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"300\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/gVy2QMp0aMQ?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>And maybe she&#8217;d end with Bird&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Billies-Bounce\/dp\/B002EDQ9EC\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Billie&#8217;s Bounce<\/a>,&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/VaKlF7bDKU4\">her version <\/a>starting at 2:55 after a tv news interview from 2008).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>James Carter,<\/strong> next up, is a ferocious reeds virtuoso to whom the entirety of jazz history is a living thing. Carter does typically dynamic things with <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/DQVtewvKuPQ\">&#8220;Night in Tunisia<\/a>,&#8221; Dizzy Gillespie&#8217;s exotic bebop theme recorded by him\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/A-Night-In-Tunisia\/dp\/B0012JBMEG\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">with Bird at Town Hall <\/a>in 1945, performed by Carter with trumpeter Nicholas Payton . . .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"390\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/DQVtewvKuPQ?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>For all his bluesy roots, Charlie Parker harbored some dicty musical aspirations &#8212; and accomplished one, to play with orchestral backing, on two sessions compiled as\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bird-With-Strings\/dp\/B002Y8TG42\/?tag=howardmacom-20\"><em>Bird With Strings<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/a>(and reeds). Carter takes on\u00c2\u00a0movie soundtrack ballad \u00c2\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002Y8X288\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Laura<\/a>&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0which\u00c2\u00a0Bird recast (arranged by Joe Lipman) in\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/tJ_cnJp71BA\">the concert Eastwood After Hours at Carnegie Hall<\/a>.<br \/>\n<object width=\"480\" height=\"390\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/tJ_cnJp71BA?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Carter doesn&#8217;t end with ballads, though &#8212; he tears up blues like &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/4R1sPKxckkE\">Walk the Dog<\/a>&#8221; with his organ trio, as at Madison Square Park just a year ago. . .<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jean &#8220;Toots&#8221; Thielemans<\/strong>, harmonica soloist, guitarist, whistler and songwriter, jammed with Charlie Parker at a session in Paris in 1949. He wa to have headlined the Charlie Parker Jazz Fest and might have eased in using the bop&#8217;s standard <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/CBocjNZ2osQ\">&#8220;How High The Moon<\/a>&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/High-Moon-feat-Ella-Fitzgerald\/dp\/B005FYL8FW\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Ella Fitzgerald<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0, with the Gillespie Orchestra,\u00c2\u00a0scats it). Suprise guest! Popular, soulful altoist David Sanborn joins Toots on sopranino sax (closer to the harmonica&#8217;s register than soprano or alto) for <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/3yrbIk8hwe0\">&#8220;Little Suede Shoes<\/a>&#8221; which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/My-Little-Suede-Shoes\/dp\/B001NYINUG\/?tag=howardmacom-20  \">Bird recorded<\/a> in 1951.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"390\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Bfhid36uOUo?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Of course, Thielemans won&#8217;t leave without playing his signature piece, the jazz waltz <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/yKnG_9q4crA\">&#8220;Bluesette&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s all for today&#8217;s Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, quite sufficient to lead to finding a Bird favorite &#8212; like &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nows-The-Time\/dp\/B002EAMADY\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Now&#8217;s The Time,<\/a>&#8221; with (as I write in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Miles-Ornette-Cecil-Jazz-Beyond\/dp\/0415967147\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">my book<\/a>) the first mature solo Miles Davis committed to record in 1945.
