{"id":403,"date":"2011-06-24T09:16:20","date_gmt":"2011-06-24T13:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/2011\/06\/new_nea_jazz_masters_a_classy\/"},"modified":"2011-06-24T09:16:20","modified_gmt":"2011-06-24T13:16:20","slug":"new_nea_jazz_masters_a_classy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2011\/06\/new_nea_jazz_masters_a_classy.html","title":{"rendered":"New NEA Jazz Masters: A classy last class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Endowment for the Arts&#8217;s final designated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/jazz\/jmCMS\/JMintro.php?chooseyear=2012\">Jazz Masters<\/a> are all worthy: drummer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jackdejohnette.com\/\">Jack DeJohnette<\/a>,&nbsp;saxophonist <a href=\"http:\/\/go54321.tripod.com\/vf\/vonfreeman.html\">Von Freeman<\/a>,&nbsp;bassist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charliehadenmusic.com\/\">Charlie Haden<\/a>, singer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheilajordanjazz.com\/\">Sheila Jordan<\/a> and trumpeter-educator-organizer-gadfly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jimmyowensjazz.com\/\">Jimmy Owens<\/a> have had long and profoundly influential if not broadly celebrated or financially rewarded creative careers. So much the worse that this 30 year program highlighting genuine American artistic heroes has been zeroed out in the 2012 budget, to be replaced by proposed &#8220;American Artist of the Years Awards&#8221; that will toss jazz musicians into a mix including every kind of artist working in the performing arts (defined as dance, music, opera, musical theater and theater), with a de-emphasis on long-demonstrated artistry (I&#8217;ve blogged about this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2011\/02\/nea_responds_awards_for_the_fu.html\">in detail<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2011\/02\/nea_wants_to_end_jazz_masters.html\">previously<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Jazz Masters announcement was made in conjunction with announcements of&nbsp;new&nbsp;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/heritage\/2011-NEA-Heritage-Fellows-Announced.html\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; \">NEA National Heritage Fellowships<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.gov\/honors\/opera\/media\/2011-opera-honorees.html\">NEA Opera Honors<\/a> recipients; both those programs have also been eliminated in the NEA&#8217;s 2012 budget.<\/span><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nEnding the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neajazzmasters.org\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; \">Jazz Masters program<\/a>&nbsp;which the NEA ballyhoos as &#8220;the nation&#8217;s top jazz honor&#8221; and which has conferred that status on 124 people over the past three decades leaves many equally worthy candidates without hopes of the $25,000 prize and, more significantly, official U.S. governmental admiration for lives exemplifying the USA&#8217;s forward-looking, democratic ideals regarding original individual expression and spontaneous collaboration. I have my own long, long list as to whom should be put on the Jazz Masters&#8217; pedestal and they are entirely subjective (<b>Sam Rivers<\/b>, age 87; <b>Roscoe Mitchell<\/b>, age 71; <b>Henry Threadgill<\/b>, 67; <b>Eddie Palmieri<\/b>, 74; <b>Andrew Cyrille<\/b>, 71; <b>Dee Dee Bridgewater<\/b>, 61; <b>Roswell Rudd<\/b>, 75; <b>Dave Holland<\/b>, 63; <b>Dave Burrell<\/b>, 70; and <b>Reggie Workman<\/b>, 74 are at the top) and you can create your own, as jazz musician and educator <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.noahjazz.com\/?p=41\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; \">Noah Baerman has<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There are those who deny that the Jazz Masters program is good for jazz, and I think they&#8217;re wrong. His most recent ensemble featuring saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, guitarist Dave Fuiczynski, pianist George Colligan and bassist Jerome Harris is cutting edge exciting and inspires him to play hard. He&#8217;s the drummer on Miles Davis&#8217; <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bitches-Brew-Legacy-Miles-Davis\/dp\/B003M0H4NG\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Bitches Brew<\/a><\/i>, too. As an introduction to his work, try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/New-Directions\/dp\/B000VZO55K\/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1308927567&amp;sr=8-6\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">New Directions<\/a>, a 1978 quartet with the late, great Lester Bowie (an unacknowledged jazz master) and the track &#8220;Silver Hollow,&#8221; named for DeJohnette&#8217;s home outside of Woodstock NY.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; \"><strong style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; \">\n<div style=\"display: inline !important; \"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 51, 102); font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; \"><strong style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; \"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: arial, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif; line-height: normal; font-size: 13px; \">Freeman<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: arial, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; font-size: 13px; \"> (87 &#8212; for whom I wrote a nomination letter in 2009) is Chicago&#8217;s reigning jazz father figure, who has for decades taught numerous saxophone stars (aforementioned Mahanthappa, Steve Coleman, his own son Chico Freeman, etc. etc.) from the bandstand of his modest weekly gigs on the South Side. On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lester-Leaps-In\/dp\/B002RB19ZK\/ref=sr_shvl_album_4?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1308928349&amp;sr=301-4\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Lester Leaps In<\/a>&nbsp;from 1993 he leads a Chicago quartet including vastly under-appreciated pianist Jodie Christian, stalwart bassist Eddie de Haas and the late drummer Wilbur Campbell &#8212; all of whom are jazz masters. Her very earliest recordings, &#8220;You Are My Sunshine&#8221; on George Russell&#8217;s album <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Outer-View-George-Russell\/dp\/B000000YSS\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">The Outer View <\/a><\/i>and her own <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Portrait-Sheila-Jordan\/dp\/B000005HDW\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Portrait of Sheila<\/a><\/i> (from 1962, now out of print) are timeless, but her album&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jazz-Child-Sheila-Jordan\/dp\/B00000IO9D\/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1308938883&amp;sr=8-7 \/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Jazz Child<\/a> from 1999 conveys what she&#8217;s learned and earned over time. One highlight is &#8220;Art Deco,&#8221; her lyrics to a lovely melody by the late, never-Jazz Master-honored trumpeter <\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: arial, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif; line-height: normal; font-size: 13px; \">Don Cherry<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: arial, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; font-size: 13px; \">.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<p><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Jimmy Owens<\/b> emerged in the &#8217;70s as a fire-breathing trumpeter, but his recordings as a leader have been few and far between as he&#8217;s concentrated on jazz education and making music as a featured player. Considering his interest in team-play, it&#8217;s appropriate to recommend listeners curious about his sound to check out <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/One-More-Music-Thad-Jones\/dp\/B0007WQHSA\/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_img_in\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">One More: Music of Thad Jones<\/a><\/i> on which Owens has the horn chair in an all-star octet revisiting the compositions of the late trumpeter\/composer\/orchestra co-leader who was named an NEA Jazz Master in 1989.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; \"><strong style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; \"><strong style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; \"><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><strong style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; \"><strong style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; \"><strong style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; \"><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><strong style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; \">These Jazz Masters will be feted and heard at a concert next January at Jazz at Lincoln Center, which the NEA credits as a partner in the presentations. The NEA\/JALC concerts have been glorious events and I look forward to the 2012 edition. But it&#8217;s unclear whether some of other benefits Jazz Masters have enjoyed, such as tour and appearance support, will be offered to this group. Yes or no, it&#8217;s too damn bad the United States of America will no longer have a policy of identifying, praising and higher-profiling artists who work specifically in the jazz field, which so much different in every way than the world that&#8217;s available to dancers and choreographers, opera singers and orchestras, classical music composers and soloists and ensembles, theater directors and actors and musical theater participants.&nbsp;<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#333333\" face=\"arial, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"3\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px; \"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#333333\" face=\"arial, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"3\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px; \">It doesn&#8217;t help the jazz cause that there is no concerted effort by any jazz-representative group to raise funds to supplant the NEA&#8217;s Jazz Masters program. I&#8217;ve heard unsubstantiated rumors that the constituency for the National Heritage Fellowships has banded together and present<br \/>\ned their case for continuing that program to congressmen, hoping they&#8217;ll restore funds for that project through budget appropriations that are removed from the NEA itself. If only jazz people could try that same tactic. . .&nbsp;<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#333333\" face=\"arial, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"3\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px; \"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#333333\" face=\"arial, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"3\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px; \">Meanwhile, there are several National Heritage fellows who deserve mention here, since they&#8217;re linked to jazz or the traditions that led up to jazz or follow from jazz or something like it.
