Tweet about live performances using hashmark #jazzlives, detailing who and when in 140 characters.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Jazz fests rage across America in the next couple of weeks starting Aug. 29-30 with NYC&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityparksfoundation.org\/index1.aspx?BD=20747\">Charlie Parker fest<\/a>, picking up Sept 4 through 6 \u00c2\u00a0&#8211;\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.berkshirefinearts.com\/?page=article&amp;article_id=905&amp;catID=8\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; \">Tanglewood<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazzinchicago.org\/presents\/jazz-festival\/31st-annual-chicago-jazz-festival-presented-carefusion\">Chicago<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detroitjazzfest.com\/\">Detroit<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.angelcityjazzfestival.com\/\">Angel City Jazz Fest<\/a>, LA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sweethot.org\/festival_info.html\">Sweet &amp; Hot Music Festival<\/a>, \u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/vailjazz.org\/VailJazzFestival\/labordayweekend\/index.htm\">Vail Jazz Party<\/a>, Philadelphia&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maccjazz.org\/festival\/jf1.php3\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; \">Tony Williams Scholarship Jazz Festival<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0plus some fests with jazz-influenced acts, rhythms and improv such as\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stayaspensnowmass.com\/p-labor-day-weekend-jazz-fest.php\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; \">Jazz Aspen Snowmass<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0Seattle&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumbershoot.org\/\">Bumbershoot<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegetdown.org\/\">Getdown fest and campout<\/a> near Chapel Hill NC. Overall, tens of thousands of fans will be in attendance. I suggest we all raise our electronic hands on Twitter (accounts are free) to signal that we <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic; \">are <\/span>listening, that there is <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic; \">indeed<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic; \">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>a significant\u00c2\u00a0audience including people young enough both age and spirit to send a noticeable wave through social networking,\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/arts.endow.gov\/news\/news09\/SPPA-highlights.html\">National Endowment of the Arts data<\/a> from &#8217;08 notwithstanding.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>In a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970204619004574320303103850572.html\">Wall Street Journal article<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/aboutlastnight\/2009\/08\/tt_on_the_air_6.html\">Terry Teachou<\/a>t cited NEA findings which\u00c2\u00a0detail downturns in attendance of <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">all<\/span> arts events but a particularly &#8220;rapidly aging&#8221; jazz audience. This provoked a storm of opinion and analysis <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/glogin?URI=http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/19\/arts\/music\/19jazz.html&amp;OQ=_rQ3D1Q26pagewantedQ3Dall&amp;OP=49439c11Q2FfQ3FynftXG-qXXZ.f.Q3AQ3A5fQ3AQ5DfB5fQ23qZ-fjQ60-hGfB5Q24Q23Q7BQ7BQ2BaZjI\">in the press<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/mt4\/mt.cgi?__mode=view&amp;_type=entry&amp;id=21885&amp;blog_id=24&amp;saved_changes=1\">on the web<\/a>. My posted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2009\/08\/mr_teachout_gets_the_word.html\">response<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0suggested he&#8217;d fallen into the trap of predicting jazz&#8217;s death, due to this passage:\u00c2\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Arial; line-height: 19px; \">Nobody&#8217;s listening.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Arial; line-height: 19px; \">No, it&#8217;s not quite that bad&#8211;but it&#8217;s no longer possible for head-in-the-sand types to pretend that the great American art form is economically healthy or that its future looks anything other than bleak.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It&#8217;s true that venues, record companies and fests (not only those featuring jazz) are closing &#8212; \u00c2\u00a0we&#8217;re in a <a href=\"http:\/\/recession.org\/\">recession<\/a>, during which <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">many<\/span> businesses have closed, and\u00c2\u00a0jazz presentation has always been a volatile, marginally profitable enterprise.\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lajazz.com\/blog10.cfm\">Jazz cd sales<\/a> haven&#8217;t been comparable to any but classical music sales for almost 40 years (since the release of\u00c2\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic; \"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bitches-Brew-Miles-Davis\/dp\/B001H1OUWU\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Bitches Brew<\/a><\/span>) and we&#8217;re currently experiencing of a major media transition, so fewer young people are buying CDs, some are downloading (yes, maybe jazz) for free, and there&#8217;s no reason a young cohort should identify strongly or exclusively with old school jazz as a genre, though they may like a recording or artist here or there, or identify with players their own age (who may spurn the &#8220;jazz&#8221; id-tag, for a variety of reasons, yet still play music that&#8217;s jazz in its essence). Terrestial jazz radio is mostly on\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=10002\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; \">NPR<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0Of <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">course<\/span> the audience is aging by percentage &#8212; as baby boomers, still the largest demographic group, are aging.\u00c2\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Still, everywhere\u00c2\u00a0where I&#8217;ve been in the past year\u00c2\u00a0(New York, Chicago, Boston, Hanover NH, \u00c2\u00a0Portland OR and Ponta Delgada in the Azores) \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;ve seen numerous young people in jazz audiences. Enrollment in high school and college jazz programs (there are about 180 of them in the US currently, and more in Canada and the UK) is high, and a Google search of &#8220;jazz website&#8221; comes up with 58 million citations. In the New York Times Nate Chinen mentioned similar &#8220;anecdotal evidence&#8221; &#8212; also known as on-site observation. Teachout, rightly hard-headed, dismisses the discrepancy between the NEA&#8217;s data and pro-jazz stories in favor of the suggestion of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazz.com\/jazz-blog\/2009\/7\/7\/ugly-news-on-the-jazz-audience\">Jazz.com&#8217;s Ted Gioia<\/a>:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Verdana; line-height: 19px; \">The\u00c2\u00a0<i>Times<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0cites &#8220;anecdotal evidence&#8221; of young people attending jazz events. . . . I guess they need a new infusion of anecdotes.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Fair enough, but rather than more stories, let&#8217;s establish some new numbers. How many tweets including the hashmark #jazzlives can we accumulate over the next couple of weeks? What if we take this campaign to Facebook and other social networking sites, too? The numbers won&#8217;t be statistically valid, but will provide a new metric for references&#8217; sake. Could we reach the 500,000 typically applied to attendees at\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcchronicle.com\/articles\/2009\/08\/13\/43725660\/index.xml\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; \">Woodstock<\/a>?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I hereby urge jazz bloggers and websites and jazz fests and venues to promote the idea that jazz listeners tweet including: #jazzlives, who was playing and where.\u00c2\u00a0Open a\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/\">Twitter<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0account if you don&#8217;t already have one &#8212; it&#8217;s free and this is NOT a Twitter promotion, it just happens to work for these kinds of campaigns. Including #jazzlives will allow the tweets to be searchable at Twitter and to be scrolled on a widget that can be embedded into websites and blogs (email tweetjazzlives@gmail.com for the widget code &#8212; you can see how it looks at<a href=\"http:\/\/www.HowardMandel.com\"> www.HowardMandel.com<\/a>). No further commitment, nothing to buy.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Something&#8217;s going on with our culture, and we probably don&#8217;t know what it is. I acknowledge a major shift in arts and entertainments, but I don&#8217;t think jazz is more endangered than it has been since the birth of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazz.com\/dozens\/beatles-covers-leskovic\">Beatles<\/a>. I believe jazz &#8212; which I define loosely as music typically but not always employing rhythmic momentum, derived at least in part from the African-American and urban vernacular, involving ensemble interactivity and valuing musical ability, but you are urged to define however <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">you<\/span> want to &#8212; is surviving.
