About half a dozen uniformed police officers hung around, available and amiable, untroubled and untroubling. Dawkins gave them a shout out from the stage. The biggest problem was the vegan food never arrived. The Englewood Jazz Festival was a lark in the park.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the Live the Spirit Residency Big Band&#8217;s soloists took it seriously, their music consistently tight and urgent. Trumpeter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pharezwhitted.com\/\">Pharez Whitted <\/a>isn&#8217;t to be messed with &#8212; he was also playing that night as he had the night before at the<a href=\"http:\/\/greenmilljazz.com\/\"> Green Mill<\/a> in pianist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydeparkjazzfestival.org\/willie-pickens-2017\/\">Willie Pickens<\/a>&#8216; quintet, masterful on ditties like &#8220;Salt Peanuts&#8221; and &#8220;Giant Steps&#8221;. Here he was paired with trumpeter John Moore, whose open attack and muted\u00c2\u00a0sound, too,<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2343\" style=\"width: 331px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Ernest-Dawkins-HM-9-16-17.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2343\" class=\"wp-image-2343 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Ernest-Dawkins-HM-9-16-17-300x259.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Ernest-Dawkins-HM-9-16-17-300x259.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Ernest-Dawkins-HM-9-16-17-768x662.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Ernest-Dawkins-HM-9-16-17-1024x883.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Ernest-Dawkins-HM-9-16-17.jpeg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 321px) 100vw, 321px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ernest Dawkins and Howard Mandel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>reminded me of late, little-heralded <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Brimfield\">Billy Brimfield<\/a>, trumpet partner of late, deservedly-heralded saxophonist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagoparkdistrict.com\/parks\/fred-anderson-park\/\">Fred Anderson.<\/a> Decades ago, performing at a coffee house in Evanston, they introduced me into jazz&#8217;s serious nature.<\/p>\n<p>Pianist <a href=\"https:\/\/alexislombre.com\/long-bio\/\">Alexis Lombre<\/a> thickened and detailed the ensemble&#8217;s blend (she&#8217;s going to appear solo and with her trio at the <a href=\"http:\/\/jazzinchicago.org\/2017-annual-gala-caravan-a-night-under-the-stars\/\">Jazz Institute of Chicago&#8217;s upcoming Gala<\/a> &#8212; she&#8217;s emerged from the JIC&#8217;s Links program). Baritone saxophonist <a href=\"https:\/\/originarts.com\/artists\/artist.php?Artist_ID=222\">Dudley Owens<\/a> called up phrases from the deep, his bandmates answering with contrapuntal riffs which Dawkins brought to focused climaxes. We could have been in New Orleans, Havana or Lagos &#8212; as everywhere, these beats stirred anyone alive to move. (My photojournalist pal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pokempner.net\/\">Marc PoKempner<\/a> adds he was quite disturbed that his so-called colleagues mobbed the troupe for shots, oblivious to blocking the audience&#8217;s views.)<\/p>\n<p>Next, Maestro Dawkins presented\u00c2\u00a0Sirius\/XM jazz director and producer <a href=\"http:\/\/markruffin.com\/\">Mark Ruffin<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howardmandel.com\">me<\/a> with engraved plaques, hailing our &#8220;inspiration and many contributions to jazz in all its forms.&#8221; (trumpeter <a href=\"http:\/\/orbertdavis.com\/\">Orbert Davis<\/a>, on the road, was also so honored). His parents ran a record store, where he worked as a kid, in an adjacent neighborhood. I grew up about 3 miles due east, absorbing the spirit of our city and nation&#8217;s music from the radio, tv, my parents&#8217; records, my friends and sounds of the streets. Ruffin and I have known each other for decades &#8212; he credits me with giving him his first paying job in radio, producing a half-hour interview with needle drop of pianist Judy Roberts for Jazz Chicago, a series I co-produced with <a href=\"http:\/\/oz.ozmoticmedia.com\/about\/\">JoAnn Kawell<\/a> circa 1979 under Jazz Institute auspices, aired on WBEZ.<\/p>\n<p>He has since then racked up extensive experience in jazz radio, print journalism and presentation &#8212; he was an emcee of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofchicago.org\/city\/en\/depts\/dca\/supp_info\/chicago_jazz_festival5.html\">Chicago Jazz Festival <\/a>this year, and he&#8217;s produced Grammy-nominated albums. Orbert Davis, you should know, is the co-founder and director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagojazzphilharmonic.org\/\">Chicago Jazz Philharmonic<\/a>, with extensive educational and performance activities including collaborations with musicians in Cuba.
