Space limitations disallowed any of the resounding shout-outs I asked for from a bevy of musicians to make the print edition: No such problem on the web! I think he&#8217;s the most perfectly balanced pianist I have<br \/>\nseen, in every way: touch, feel, swing, sensitivity, accompaniment, facility,<br \/>\nheart, mind and soul. It&#8217;s pure beauty. He&#8217;s just great to know. I first met him when I was in <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold; \">Mel<br \/>\nLewi<\/span>s&#8217;s band, in 1980 -&#8217;91, since he sat in on occasion. Then when I toured<br \/>\nwith <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold; \">Elvin&#8217;s Jazz Machine<\/span> with in &#8217;87, Europe being so exciting to me and<br \/>\nme being so excited about Elvin, I remember rapping with Hank about it all back<br \/>\nthen.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:\nnone;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\"><span style=\"font-family:\n&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;;mso-bidi-font-family:Helvetica\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun:\nyes\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Bookman Old Style'; \">&#8220;In Moscow, Idaho at<br \/>\nthe <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Lionel Hampton<\/span> festivals in &#8217;94 and &#8217;95 I sat with Hank in small groups; he<br \/>\nand Elvin were sort of the house rhythm section, as I remember playing with <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold; \">Roy<br \/>\nHargrove, Benny Golson, Brian Bromberg<\/span> and <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold; \">Christian<\/span> <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold; \">McBride<\/span> and others. Then I<br \/>\nthink it was 1998 when Hank called me to guest with his trio in Birdland. That<br \/>\nwas a thrill, to have him call me. And we started recording, at first a ballad,<br \/>\ntwo or three other songs, and it became like a dream, all of a sudden we had a<br \/>\nrelationship, it wasn&#8217;t like we were just hooking up to cut a couple of pieces.<br \/>\nWe did &#8216;I&#8217;m All For You,&#8217; based on &#8216;Body and Soul,&#8217; and from that point on we<br \/>\nplayed a lot.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;mso-pagination:\nnone;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none\"><span style=\"font-family:\n&quot;Bookman Old Style&quot;;mso-bidi-font-family:Helvetica\"><o:p>\u00c2\u00a0<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Bookman Old Style'; \">&#8220;I played on Hank&#8217;s 90th<br \/>\nbirthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl last summer, and we did a duet tour<br \/>\nin San Sebastian this July. He has the best feeling and touch; he&#8217;s one of the<br \/>\nmost distinctive voices in modern jazz, and captures you from the first moment<br \/>\nyou hear him. He&#8217;s copied and valued by everyone when you&#8217;re playing with him<br \/>\nin an ensemble. He has an uncanny way of following and leading with equal<br \/>\nbalance. It&#8217;s egoless in appearance, but the way he swings and accompanies you<br \/>\nwith dynamics is like no one else. His clarity and focus are amazing, he always<br \/>\ncomes up with new voicings, he doesn&#8217;t repeat himself, he&#8217;s always moving<br \/>\nforward &#8212; he has a very free approach within the music he loves to play. He&#8217;s<br \/>\ninto detail, the way he puts things together, but he&#8217;s also loose and open to<br \/>\nthe flow of the moment. He&#8217;s totally modern in his approach, and timeless. He&#8217;s<br \/>\ninfluenced me enormously, with his sense of phrasing and space. He takes me<br \/>\nplaces.
