(Gotta wonder what a music fan raised on the past decades&#8217; pop, country and rap but who never heard anything like this would make of the power of 16 players so synced in rhythm, tune and spirit, partying with sound).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lensculture.com\/lauren-deutsch\"><strong>Lauren Deutsch&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> photos depict that set splendidly &#8212; (and thanks in large part to her work over the past 21 years as executive director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.JazzinChicago.org\">Jazz Institute of Chicago<\/a>, the fest retains its essential community DNA).<\/p>\n<p>To expand: The huge screen backdrop is good for attendees in the grassy field and back rows of seats, but can dwarf those onstage. Gillespie was a pioneer of drawing on Afro-Cuban, Caribbean and South American elements and on the flagwaver &#8220;Manteca&#8221; Faddis&#8217; silvery upper register is so amazing we might forget what a swift and sensitively musical mind he has. But like Gillespie, that&#8217;s the real crux of his creativity, his high notes and wit, willingness to be silly and ability to spontaneously inspire a dozen or so virtuosi simply aspects of it. Faddis demonstrated generosity as well as geniality joshing with<a href=\"http:\/\/www.victorgarciamusic.com\/\">\u00c2\u00a0Victor Garcia<\/a>, an up&#8217;n&#8217;coming Chicagoan in the brass section, creating a running joke that had a handsome musical payoff, gaining Garcia extra attention for his flugelhorn feature. \u00c2\u00a0(More or perhaps less incidentally, the very first solo of this show, on &#8220;Night In Tunisia,&#8221; was performed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trombone-usa.com\/morrison_audrey_bio.htm\">Audrey Morrison<\/a>, Jazz Studies Director at the Music Institute of Chicago,\u00c2\u00a0a mature white woman.)<\/p>\n<p>New Yorker <a href=\"http:\/\/antoniohart.com\/\">Antonio Hart<\/a>, a last minute sub for <em>his<\/em> mentor, saxophonist Jimmy Heath (91, he had a medical issue) <div id=\"attachment_2303\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273376_10154723372075925_4085019923857026888_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2303\" class=\"wp-image-2303 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273376_10154723372075925_4085019923857026888_o-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273376_10154723372075925_4085019923857026888_o-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273376_10154723372075925_4085019923857026888_o-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273376_10154723372075925_4085019923857026888_o.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alto saxophone Antonio Hart soloing on &#8220;Things to Come&#8221; by Dizzy Gillespie<\/p><\/div> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Here-I-Stand-Antonio-Hart\/dp\/B000003N8V\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">a standout<\/a>, tearing through &#8220;Things to Come,&#8221; Gillespie&#8217;s warning from 1946, in alto sax language that took the freedoms claimed by of Charlie Parker\u00c2\u00a0through the changes wrought by such as Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Albert Ayler. Chicago tenor saxophonist Pat Mallinger of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/event\/music\/456650692\/sabertooth-or-the-23-year-midnight-gig\">Sabretooth, the hardbitten, longtime midnight Saturday to 4 am Sunday <\/a>attraction at the Green Mill, showed his stuff, as did trumpeter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/entertainment\/music\/reich\/ct-pharez-whitted-review-ent-0715-20170714-column.html\">Pharez Whitted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The rhythm section, however, was this orchestra&#8217;s solid core: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toddcoolman.org\/bio\">Dr. Todd Coolman<\/a>, understated but unwavering bassist and professor (former director) of jazz studies at Purchase College (SUNY), where Faddis also teaches; drummer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drummerworld.com\/drummers\/Ignacio_Berroa.html\">Ignacio Berroa<\/a>, who arrived in the US from his native Havana as a refugee\/alien during the 1981 Mariel boatlift, was hired by Gillespie for his quartet and stayed until the trumpeter&#8217;s death in &#8217;93, \u00c2\u00a0plus Chicago pianist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hydeparkjazzfestival.org\/willie-pickens-2017\/\">Willie Pickens<\/a>, at age 86 undiminished in ideas and agility.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2300\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273362_10154723371355925_3596405348109039638_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2300\" class=\"wp-image-2300 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273362_10154723371355925_3596405348109039638_o-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273362_10154723371355925_3596405348109039638_o-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273362_10154723371355925_3596405348109039638_o-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273362_10154723371355925_3596405348109039638_o-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/21273362_10154723371355925_3596405348109039638_o.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Willie Pickens<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Just days earlier I&#8217;d heard Pickens in command of entirely different repertoire, accompanying Gary Bartz.
