Photos by S\u00c3\u00a1nta Istv\u00c3\u00a1n Csaba<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Still, as in the Saturday night jam session at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjc.hu\/home\/\">Budapest Jazz Club<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0&#8211; a very cool hangout which advertised Jeff &#8220;Tain&#8221; Watts, Joe Lovano and Steve Coleman as coming attractions supplementing local groups, the vibe was familiar from my travels in Armenia, the Azores, Berlin, Cuba, Denmark, Gambia, Italy, St. Petersberg, Tampere, Trinidad, Ukraine as well as the States. Whatever a community&#8217;s resources, there are commonalities in the jazz world everywhere, this capital of Central Europe most definitely included.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2198\" style=\"width: 363px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2198\" class=\"wp-image-2198\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/BudapestJazzonance_2017-wider-300x200.jpg\" width=\"353\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/BudapestJazzonance_2017-wider-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/BudapestJazzonance_2017-wider.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Second grouping of Jazzonance portraits in M\u00c3\u00bcpa<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The singing in English, allusions to Monk (as I took the approach of alto saxophonist G\u00c3\u00a1bor Baris&#8217;s Version), reverence for Coltrane (especially by alto\/soprano saxist Tam\u00c3\u00a1s Lud\u00c3\u00a1nyi) and interest in Herbie Hancock bleeding over to pop stars such as J Dilla (by drummer David Hodek, grooving with American pianist Paul Cornish and bassist Joshua Crumbly) and Betty Wright (smoldering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UZdMZMM9W2I\">singer Janka V\u00c3\u00b6r\u00c3\u00b6s&#8217; finale<\/a>), with Santa&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a02.5 x 2 meter\u00c2\u00a0closeups of U.S. jazz masters on the walls \u00c2\u00a0&#8211;&#8220;Jazzonance&#8221; was M\u00c3\u00bcpa&#8217;s exhibit title \u00c2\u00a0&#8212; and companionable journo\/jurists\u00c2\u00a0from Sofia, Slovenia, London, plus\u00c2\u00a0Budapest-based\u00c2\u00a0freelancer Korn\u00c3\u00a9l Zipernovszky and the generously great Hungarian guitarist\u00c2\u00a0Gyula Babos &#8211; let\u00c2\u00a0me feel almost\u00c2\u00a0at home, while refreshed by particular differences.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Aa4BJN43s1Q?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Such as the architecture &#8212; 19th and 20th century glories, variously preserved, restored or abandoned. Proud museums, palaces and six-story apartment buildings with ground-floor retail shops and caf\u00c3\u00a9s, on concentric\u00c2\u00a0circular boulevards. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gell%C3%A9rt_Hill_Cave\">Gellert Hill Cave<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0thermal baths and church in St. Ivan&#8217;s grottos. Trams running up each side of the river, the Danube&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0bridges rebuilt since Nazi destruction in WWII. Photo by S\u00c3\u00a1nt\u00c3\u00a1 Istv\u00c3\u00a1n Csaba<\/p><\/div>\n<p>All contrasting with but complementary to the Jazz Showcase\/Talent Exchange (wherein some of the Hungarians travel to perform at London&#8217;s 606 Club, and others are booked into events via the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europejazz.net\/jazz-pages\/organization\/hungarian-jazz-federation\">Hungarian Jazz Federation<\/a>, part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.europejazz.net\/\">European Jazz Network<\/a>). The basics of individual expression amid\u00c2\u00a0group collaborations performed for the entertainment and enlightenment of general audiences have been well established here. The integration of attractive, useful ideas coming from myriad sources is, at least superficially, high. I had just a quick visit, and no doubt experienced\u00c2\u00a0a mere\u00c2\u00a0slip of what&#8217;s happening in Budapest.
