It&#8217;s the love-child of Dr. Alice Jamison, who owns the building, and trumpeter, artistic\u00c2\u00a0director and building contractor DeAndrey Howard, who spent five years\u00c2\u00a0renovating the formerly dilapidated storefront\u00c2\u00a0into a friendly, intimate, nonprofit, alcohol-free,<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2011\" style=\"width: 382px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/imgres-6.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2011\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2011\" class=\"wp-image-2011 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/imgres-6-300x141.jpg\" alt=\"imgres-6\" width=\"372\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/imgres-6-300x141.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/imgres-6.jpg 327w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DeAndrey Howard announcing at JACS &#8211; CapitolBop<\/p><\/div>\n<p>soul-food-available space that hosts local bands and all-age (under 12, free) audiences. Admission is $5, sodas and waters\u00c2\u00a0cost $1, there&#8217;s a grand piano and Hammond B-3 organ onstage, perfect sight- lines and good sound, comfortable seating at tables.<\/p>\n<p>About 50 people gathered last night to hear singer Tiya Ade, with pianist Vince Smith, bassist Tim Jones and a tenor saxophonist whose name I missed but who tore through Sonny Rollins&#8217; &#8220;Sonnymoon for Two&#8221; and was appropriately gentle on &#8220;Old Folks.&#8221; Few listeners left during the set-break, when Howard, who had been playing drums, sat down to explain to me that he has strict ideas about programming: No smooth jazz, only <i>true\u00c2\u00a0<\/i>jazz played by musicians who are <em>ready<\/em>, and if anyone starts blowing something like Marvin Gaye&#8217;s &#8220;What&#8217;s Goin&#8217; On&#8221; he walks up in front of them and casts a hard look.<\/p>\n<p>DeAndrey has a long-term, go-slow vision for developing JACS&#8217;s presentations &#8212; a recent &#8220;Spoken Word&#8221; night drew a large crowd, on average younger than those usually in attendance. But whatever the age of listeners, JACS is clearly a hangout promoting socializing, relaxation and enjoyment of the original American art form.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2013\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016JazzHeroesWITHnumbersver3.31.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2013\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2013\" class=\"wp-image-2013 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016JazzHeroesWITHnumbersver3.31-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"2016JazzHeroesWITHnumbersver3.31\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016JazzHeroesWITHnumbersver3.31-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/2016JazzHeroesWITHnumbersver3.31.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2016 Jazz Heroes &#8212; Bios at JJAJazzAwards.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After I posted\u00c2\u00a0notes to Facebook a couple days ago about President Barack Obama hosting <a href=\"http:\/\/jazzday.com\/news\/\">International Jazz Day (April 30) at the White House<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0&#8212; and also the Jazz Journalists Association&#8217;s celebrations for<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jjajazzawards.org\/p\/2016-jazz-heroes.html\"> 27 &#8220;Jazz Heroes&#8221; in 23 U.S. cities<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0&#8212; several commenters complained that IJD and other comparable events are top-down and not inclusive enough for the music as it really is (one &#8220;friend&#8221; even proposed that IJD is an act of jazz suppression, although the intent is to beam its big concert to 2 billion people, world-wide). My response was that initiatives like IJD and the Jazz Masters intend to reach beyond the hard-core jazz world to people who may have little knowledge, interest or access, and that if there&#8217;s not enough jazz in one&#8217;s locale, determined activism can change that.<\/p>\n<p>Places like the Jazz and Culture Society &#8212; also <a href=\"http:\/\/sistasplace.org\/\">Sistas&#8217; Place<\/a> in Brooklyn, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hydeparkjazzsociety.org\/series.html\">Room 43<\/a> in Chicago&#8217;s Kenwood neighborhood and <a href=\"http:\/\/elasticarts.org\/\">Elastic Arts<\/a> in fashionable Logan Square, the <a href=\"http:\/\/lilypadinman.com\/category\/music\/avant-garde\/\">Lilypad<\/a> in Cambridge MA &#8212; prove that despite all challenges and impediments, where there&#8217;s a will there&#8217;s a way. Putting forth and preserving\u00c2\u00a0creative music has not been easy in the U.S. maybe ever, and increasingly less so over the past 50 years.
