They receive no\u00c2\u00a0cash award, but are celebrated by their friends and neighbors at public festivities and with official proclamations throughout Jazz Appreciation Month running up to International Jazz Day &#8212; what the JJA calls <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazzapril.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JazzApril<\/a>. The Heroes are listed below, with numbers corresponding to their thumbnails in the photo collage.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1805\" style=\"width: 185px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Akinmusire-Head-Full.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1805\" class=\"wp-image-1805\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Akinmusire-Head-Full-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"Akinmusire-Head-Full\" width=\"175\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1805\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ambrose Akinmusire &#8211; The Guardian<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Just to be clear: I&#8217;m president of the Jazz Journalists Association &#8212; which\u00c2\u00a0received funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation via the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in 2013 for our eyeJAZZ jazz-news video initiative.\u00c2\u00a0And I know that there is enormous difference in intent as to what the JJA and DDCF are trying to accomplish. Our organization is interested in encouraging\u00c2\u00a0grassroots jazz activists to use media to spread buzz about the music. DDCF is dedicated to providing &#8220;deepened investments in the artists&#8217; personal and professional development and future work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Certainly that must be a worthy endeavor. Foundation and institutional patronage of the arts in the U.S. is a highly contentious issue and the history of it has not favored jazz. Ornette Coleman&#8217;s 1967 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nndb.com\/honors\/485\/000032389\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guggenheim fellowship<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is usually cited as\u00c2\u00a0the first\u00c2\u00a0such prestigious and generous honor\u00c2\u00a0for jazz composition, and the National Endowment for the Arts started its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nndb.com\/honors\/485\/000032389\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jazz Initiative<\/a> acknowledging Jazz Masters as well as funding jazz projects with grants in 1982. Today, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macfound.org\/fellows\/class\/class-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MacArthur Foundation<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/herbalpertawards.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Herb Alpert Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitedstatesartists.org\/fellows\/?category=Music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US Artists<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ddpaa.org\/artists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DDCF<\/a> bestow funds of varying degrees of largess upon jazz people and other music creators (also practitioners of other disciplines) through processes of private nomination and panelists&#8217; selection.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1808\" style=\"width: 182px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Melford_Head_Full.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1808\" class=\"wp-image-1808\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Melford_Head_Full-300x217.jpg\" alt=\"Melford_Head_Full\" width=\"172\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Melford_Head_Full-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Melford_Head_Full.jpg 511w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 172px) 100vw, 172px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Myra Melford \u00c2\u00a9 Michael Wilson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The funding can have profound affect &#8212; I just attended DDCF Performing Artist Myra\u00c2\u00a0Melford&#8217;s week-long residency at The Stone, at which my presence and more importantly that of her collaborators, as well as film and audio recording and public relations services were made possible by the grants she has received. Myra&#8217;s 12 sets of performances by 10 different ensembles over six days were abundant with beautiful music. She received coverage in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, TimeOutNewYork, The New Yorker and the LA Times, and generated interest from other venues in having her perform for them. DDCF&#8217;s investment paid off in significantly raising her profile and we hope in the near future exposing her enriching music to larger, more widespread audiences. Grants like these seem to elevate an elite class with certified status. On the one hand, it&#8217;s great<br \/>\nthat people doing exemplary if not necessarily commercial work are recognized and rewarded. On the other hand, these grant programs select one talent suitable to receive up to, say $275,000 (new DDPAs Abrams, Akinmusire and Steve Coleman already received Doris Duke <a href=\"http:\/\/ddpaa.org\/program\/ddimpactawards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Impact Awards<\/a>, but those $80,000 grants are deducted from their DDPA funding), when $275k might also, for instance, be split among 11 artists who&#8217;d receive a still generous $25k each.<\/p>\n<p>Does the idea of rounding up of a coterie of even the greatest artists for financial support while overall funding for the arts in the U.S., whether from commercial entities, public or private\u00c2\u00a0ones remains so indeterminate\u00c2\u00a0bother anyone else?
