{"id":177,"date":"2009-04-06T12:10:06","date_gmt":"2009-04-06T16:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/2009\/04\/lose_some_gain_some\/"},"modified":"2011-04-28T16:34:06","modified_gmt":"2011-04-28T20:34:06","slug":"lose_some_gain_some","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2009\/04\/lose_some_gain_some.html","title":{"rendered":"Lose some, gain some"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ASCAP&#8217;s longstanding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascap.com\/eventsawards\/awards\/deems_taylor\/index.html\">Deems Taylor Awards<\/a> recognizing excellence in music journalism has been suspended; no-charge online listening station <a href=\"http:\/\/accujazz.com\">Accujazz.com<\/a> wants to be &#8220;the future of jazz radio.&#8221; Seismic shifts in the music media landscape continue.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nI&#8217;m a proud two-time winner of the Deems Taylor Award,\u00c2\u00a0named for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ascap.com\/eventsawards\/awards\/deems_taylor\/deems_taylor.html\" style=\"text-decoration: underline; \">late ASCAP board member<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and president who was also a composer, music journalist, broadcaster. The Awards were\u00c2\u00a0last presented in a 41st annual iteration on December 9 2008 to nine book authors including Alex Ross (for\u00c2\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic; \">The Rest Is Noise<\/span>), and John Kruth (for\u00c2\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic; \">To Live&#8217;s To Fly: The Ballad of the Late, Great Townes Van Zandt<\/span>), Howard Pollack (for\u00c2\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic; \">George Gershwin: His Life and Works)<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0and Oliver Sacks (for\u00c2\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic; \">Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain<\/span>) as well as seven writers of articles, Philadelphia public radio station WRTI, a website created by Oxford University Press&#8217; Norm Hirshy, and a posthumous award to Fred Rogers of the tv show\u00c2\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic; \">Mister Rogers&#8217; Neighborhood<\/span>. The prizes\u00c2\u00a0came with modest financial gifts ($250 to $1000, according to the ASCAP website &#8212; in &#8217;85 and &#8217;94 I received handsome plaques, no cash), but their true value is in giving some greater profile to media on music that are all too often taken for granted. According to Esther SanSaurus, who oversees the Awards, they have been suspended due to economy-related cutbacks affecting many ASCAP programs.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Without the Deems Taylor Awards, the Jazz Journalists Association&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazzhouse.org\/jazzawards2008.html\">Jazz Awards<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(2009 announcement at a gala event on June 16 at the Jazz Standard, NYC) and the NARAS <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award_for_Best_Album_Notes\">Grammies for album liner notes<\/a> seem to be the only American-based honors still available for journalists; in the UK, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recordoftheday.com\/www\/\">Record of the Day<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0last fall announced <a href=\"http:\/\/thescribblerblog.wordpress.com\/2008\/11\/28\/guardian-and-observer-clean-up-at-music-journalism-awards\/\">23 winners<\/a> in its Awards for Music Journalism and PR. We hope ASCAP resumes its Awards initiative.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On the brighter side, Accujazz.com is a bright website run by Lucas Gillian from offices in Chicago, offering a couple dozen channels of selected jazz programming. The channels are distinguished by style (&#8220;modern mainstream,&#8221; &#8220;old school,&#8221; &#8220;big band&#8221; &#8220;Latin jazz&#8221; etc.), by instruments (&#8220;piano jazz,&#8221; &#8220;vocal jazz,&#8221; &#8220;trumpet jazz,&#8221; etc.), composer (so far only Ellington and Monk, but their works are performed by many artists), region (New Orleans alone, to date), decade (&#8220;pre-1940,&#8221; &#8220;50s&#8221; &#8220;60s&#8221;).
