Photo by Bruce Williams<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Promontory, a large, flexible, shiny new <a href=\"http:\/\/promontorychicago.com\/\">performance hall in Chicago&#8217;s upswinging Hyde Park neighborhood<\/a> (home to the Obamas) opened for music last weekend with the <strong>South Side Big Band, directed by veteran composer\/arranger Tom Tom Washington<\/strong>. It&#8217;s an audacious attempt to restart commercial entertainment in an area that for decades has mostly been served by University of Chicago events. It&#8217;s also a test of the city&#8217;s South Side\/North Side \u00c2\u00a0(read: black\/white) divide.<\/p>\n<p>For the musical launch (The <a href=\"http:\/\/chicago.eater.com\/archives\/2014\/07\/21\/the-promontory-hyde-park-photos.php\">Promontory restaurant<\/a> has been open for a month) an estimated multi-racial 500 patrons sat at tables, milled about the bar and gathered on a balcony terrace. Washington, who earned his spurs as a composer-arranger for mostly jazz\/soul\/r&amp;b talents including Earth, Wind and Fire starting in the &#8217;60s, conducted players known\u00c2\u00a0from 50 years of locally based ensembles and studio sessions, as well as blues-oriented guests, most notably <strong>singer\u00c2\u00a0Maggie Brown<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0(who performs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ravinia.org\/ShowDetails\/?show=797\">a tribute to her late father, Oscar Brown Jr.<\/a>, tomorrow at north suburban Ravinia. In the night&#8217;s first set, the repertoire included the theme song of\u00c2\u00a0late local radio show host Daddy-O Daylie (was it &#8220;Midnight Sun&#8221;?),\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0&#8220;My Funny Valentine,&#8221; &#8220;Don&#8217;t Go To Strangers&#8221; and &#8220;Moody&#8217;s Mood for Love&#8221; &#8212; standards especially beloved by South Side audiences of a certain age.<\/p>\n<p>The new establishment is\u00c2\u00a0owned and operated by principals who also run <a href=\"http:\/\/evanstonspace.com\/\">Space<\/a> in north suburban Evanston, the North Side&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/emptybottle.com\/\">the Empty Bottle<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thaliahallchicago.com\/#!\/\">Thalia Hall<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0in near-South Side Pilsen (known for its Mexican community).\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Chicagoans are rather proprietary about their immediate cultural surroundings, as seems to be unfortunately natural for a city with such a history of segregation. Though you can drive pretty much from one end of Chicago to another &#8212; approximately 27 miles &#8212; in 40 minutes if the traffic is light, only hardcore fans go across town for their jollies. Too bad, because there&#8217;s a lot of good stuff all over.<\/p>\n<p>Decades back\u00c2\u00a0the South Side was home to famous venues including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcchicago.com\/the-scene\/events\/Photographer-Captures-70s-South-Side-Chicago-Nightlife-michael-abramson-71580672.html\">High Chaparral<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whatwasthere.com\/browse.aspx#!\/ll\/41.774207,-87.615502\/id\/53478\/info\/details\/zoom\/14\/\">Roberts Show Lounge<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/cinematreasures.org\/theaters\/992\">the Regal Theater<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.chicagotribune.com\/1985-03-26\/news\/8501170148_1_dance-floor-radio-band\">Grand Terrace Ballroom <\/a>(also corner blues taverns such as\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chibarproject.com\/Memoriam\/Theresa's\/Theresa's.htm\">Theresa&#8217;s<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/entertainment\/music\/16582852-421\/when-the-rolling-stones-muddy-waters-jammed-at-checkerboard.html\">Checkerboard<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/delmark.com\/rhythm.oldclubs.htm\">Pepper&#8217;s<\/a>). They&#8217;re all gone now. In 2012 U of C opened its\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arts.uchicago.edu\/logan-center\/about-logan-center\">Logan Center for the Arts,<\/a> and before that it hosted high level and long-running student activities such as an\u00c2\u00a0annual folk music festival,\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.courttheatre.org\/about\/history\/\">Court Theatre<\/a> (my parents introduced little me to Shakespeare there) and concerts like early ones by members of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aacmchicago.org\/\">the AACM.<\/a> But the U of C is virtually an integrated island on the greater South Side, where\u00c2\u00a0performances in small watering holes\u00c2\u00a0such as <a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/100548193710999438954\/about?gl=us&amp;hl=en\">City Life<\/a> and the<a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/104583333346501249036\/about?gl=us&amp;hl=en\"> Fifty Yard Line <\/a>are typically visited by outsiders during\u00c2\u00a0the August <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2010\/09\/little_known_great_jazz_in_chi.html\">Jazz Club Tour <\/a>sponsored by the Jazz Institute of Chicago (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazzinchicago.org\/jazz_club_tour\">Aug. 27<\/a>, preceding the <a href=\"http:\/\/jazzinchicago.org\/jazzfest\/\">36th annual Chicago Jazz Festival<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The South Side Big Band has been convened as an antidote to all that. Washington called it together in\u00c2\u00a02010 as much\u00c2\u00a0for rehearsals as\u00c2\u00a0performances,which he explains\u00c2\u00a0in a video produced by the\u00c2\u00a0Chicago Sun Times.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/skins\/lightgray\/img\/object.gif'); background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: #d5d5d5; outline-width: 1px; outline-style: solid; outline-color: #777777; resize: none; background-position: 50% 50%; background-repeat: no-repeat no-repeat; border: 1px dotted #3a3a3a;\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tYOZdw0YyeQ?rel=0\" width=\"443\" height=\"249\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The SSBB is obviously a collective labor of love, akin to the self-empowering strategies of such Chicago musical institutions as Orbert Davis&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagojazzphilharmonic.org\/\">Chicago Jazz Philharmonic,<\/a> the AACM and even earlier,\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunraarkestra.com\/\">Sun Ra&#8217;s Arkestra<\/a>. Whether it&#8217;s got the style to attract young people to whom the term &#8220;South Side&#8221; probably\u00c2\u00a0calls up <strong>Common<\/strong> (who&#8217;s just downsized and relocated his September\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnainfo.com\/chicago\/20140819\/woodlawn\/rapper-common-pulls-his-aahh-festival-from-south-side\">Aahh Festival<\/a>), <strong>Kanye West<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0and <strong>R. Kelly<\/strong> rather than <strong>Nat &#8220;King&#8221; Cole<\/strong>, <strong>Dinah Washington<\/strong> and <strong>Muddy Waters<\/strong> remains to be seen. Same goes for The Promontory (named for a nearby jutting of rocks into Lake Michigan). One Chicago jazz presenter who&#8217;s had some cross-boundary success predicted, &#8220;It won&#8217;t last.
