In the past 30 days I heard:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00c2\u00a0The <strong>Eric Dolphy Freedom of Sound<\/strong> 2-day conference\/concerts at Montclair State University,\u00c2\u00a0NJ May 30 and 31,<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>JJA&#8217;s NYC Jazz Awards party<\/strong> at the Blue Note (with music by Stephanie Richards Trumpet Quartet, beautiful Sheila Jordan singing with great bassist Cameron Brown and for a finale pianist Elio Villafranca&#8217;s explosive Jass Syncopators),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jack DeJohnette&#8217;s trio<\/strong> with saxophonist Ravi Coltrane celebrating bassist Matt Garrison&#8217;s 44th birthday at ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn on June 2 (where I gave Jack the JJA&#8217;s Drummer of the Year Award),<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>Celebrate Ornette! blowout <\/strong>at Brooklyn&#8217;s Prospect Park bandshell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_1665\" style=\"width: 438px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/ornette-threadgill-murray-roney-e1404264891893.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1665\" class=\"wp-image-1665\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/ornette-threadgill-murray-roney-e1404264891893.jpg\" alt=\"ornette, threadgill, murray, roney\" width=\"428\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/ornette-threadgill-murray-roney-e1404264891893.jpg 1572w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/ornette-threadgill-murray-roney-e1404264891893-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/ornette-threadgill-murray-roney-e1404264891893-1024x653.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ornette Coleman, Henry Threadgill, David Murray <br \/>and Antoine Roney play the blues in Prospect Park (photo by Emilie Pons)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<li>the admirably neighborhood-scaled <strong>Red Hook Jazz Festival,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jason Lindner playing multi-keyboards<\/strong> in trio at Shapeshifter Lab (I presented him with the JJA&#8217;s Electronic Player of the Year Award),<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>the largest yet\/all encompassing <strong>Blue Note Jazz Festival,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Guitarist-singer<strong> Michael Powers&#8217; trio<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0followed by guitarist singer\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Junior Mack<\/strong> in the twinned-guitar band\u00c2\u00a0at Terra Blues<\/li>\n<li>Lincoln Center&#8217;s Midsummer&#8217;s Night Swing&#8217;s season opener featuring\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Cecile McClorin Salvant singing with Vince Giordano&#8217;s Nighthawks<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0(Cecile received the JJA&#8217;s Female Vocalist of the Year and Up &#8216;n&#8217; Coming Artist of the Year awards),<\/li>\n<li>Hans Tammens&#8217; <strong>Dark Circuits festival of electronic music,<\/strong> including a workshop with the Korg Little Bits synthesizer kit,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Soprano saxophonist Sam Newsome and pianist Ethan Iverson<\/strong> at Greenwich Music School.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With all this going on how can I leave? Only by feeling sure I can stay in touch with the remarkable depth of musical creativity\u00c2\u00a0here &#8212; just as\u00c2\u00a0musicians and other devotees all over the U.S. (and beyond) do. Good music doesn&#8217;t live only in NYC anymore, anyway, and\u00c2\u00a0Chicago itself has long had a terrific creative music community. From\u00c2\u00a0the<a href=\"http:\/\/aacmchicago.org\/\"> AACM<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buddyguy.com\/\">urban blues<\/a>, with activity stirred by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazzinchicago.org\/\">Jazz Institute of Chicago<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hydeparkjazzfestival.org\/\">Hyde Park Jazz Festival<\/a>, Joe Segal&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazzshowcase.com\/\"> Jazz Showcase,<\/a> the <a href=\"http:\/\/greenmilljazz.com\/\">Green Mill<\/a>, Orbert Davis&#8217;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagojazzphilharmonic.org\/\"> Chicago Jazz Philharmonic<\/a>, the\u00c2\u00a0reconstituted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hothouse.net\/about.php\">Hot House<\/a>, newish <a href=\"http:\/\/www.constellation-chicago.com\">Constellation<\/a>, Evanston&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/evanstonspace.com\/\">Space<\/a>, the bistros <a href=\"http:\/\/www.andysjazzclub.com\/\">Andy&#8217;s<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.katerinas.com\/\">Katerina&#8217;s<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.experimentalsoundstudio.org\">Experimental Sound Studio<\/a> and many places I don&#8217;t even know about yet, I&#8217;ll find plenty to hear.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not &#8220;leaving&#8221; New York any more than I left Chicago in 1982, when I relocated briefly\u00c2\u00a0in Washington DC, then to Manhattan&#8217;s East Village. I love it here. I love it there, and a change will be good. I&#8217;m expanding my territory, will connect some dots and maintain a presence. O&#8217;Hare to LAG takes about the same amount of time as Penn Station to Union Station, Philadelphia.
