{"id":1381,"date":"2013-06-21T08:24:37","date_gmt":"2013-06-21T12:24:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/?p=1381"},"modified":"2019-09-12T16:15:39","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T20:15:39","slug":"kyoto-prize-to-pianistimproviser-cecil-taylor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2013\/06\/kyoto-prize-to-pianistimproviser-cecil-taylor.html","title":{"rendered":"Kyoto prize to pianist\/improviser Cecil Taylor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cecil Taylor, whose intense, lengthy and complex piano improvisations have redefined jazz and redesigned his instrument, has been awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inamori-f.or.jp\/e_topics_130621.html\">2013 Kyoto Prize<\/a> for &#8220;Arts and Philosophy: Music.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0Former recipients include Olivier Messiaen, John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Gy\u00c3\u00b6rgy Ligeti, Pierre Boulez, Witold Lutoslawski and Nikolaus Harnoncourt &#8212; all\u00c2\u00a0musicians\/composers of Western European classical lineage.\u00c2\u00a0Prizes for individuals who have &#8220;contributed significantly to the progress of science, the advancement of civilization, and the enrichment and elevation of the human spirit&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0have also been announced in the fields of Advanced Technology and Basic Science.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor has previously been honored with Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellowships, and named an NEA Jazz Master among other awards and prizes. Fly!<\/em><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Taylor-Cecil-Air-Above-Mountains\/dp\/B00937EIYA\/?tag=howardmacom-20\"><em>Air Above Mountains<\/em><\/a>, and his ensemble masterpieces<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Unit-Structures\/dp\/B000TRXNJ4\/?tag=howardmacom-20\"><em>\u00c2\u00a0Unit Structures<\/em><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Conquistador-Cecil-Taylor\/dp\/B000TERLT0\"><em>Conquistador<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Kyoto Prize was established by Kazuo Inamori in 1984; Dr. Inamori is also the founder of the\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Kyocera Corporation, an international firm dealing in a wide range of products including electronic components and consumer cellular phones and cameras.\u00c2\u00a0It is one of the highest honors conferred in Japan. Taylor, a longtime resident of Brooklyn, will be awarded his diploma, 20K gold Kyoto Prize medal and prize money of 50 million yen (approx US$500,000) in Kyoto, November 2013.
