{"id":129,"date":"2008-10-10T17:48:10","date_gmt":"2008-10-10T21:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/2008\/10\/colberts_tin_ear\/"},"modified":"2011-04-28T16:34:23","modified_gmt":"2011-04-28T20:34:23","slug":"colberts_tin_ear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2008\/10\/colberts_tin_ear.html","title":{"rendered":"Colbert&#8217;s tin ear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Steven Colbert plays a pointed dance on the funny-bone, but misled his &#8220;nation&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0unintentionally\u00c2\u00a0at least once \u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.comedycentral.com\/colbertreport\/full-episodes\/index.jhtml?episodeId=187635\">last night\u00c2\u00a0<\/a>in the segment &#8220;Who&#8217;s Not Honoring Me Now.&#8221; At 12 minutes into the show, he sniffed at the MacArthur Foundation&#8217;s award of a $500,000 fellowship to saxophonist Miguel Zenon, tongue-in-cheeking &#8220;Never give money to a jazz musician &#8212; they&#8217;ll just blow it on heroin and berets.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Then he listened to a moment of Zenon&#8217;s mellifluous style, boppin&#8217; along to it. But: &#8220;It&#8217;s not genius level jazz if it sounds like <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">music<\/span>,&#8221; Colbert went on; &#8220;Ask Pulitzer Prize-winning saxophonist Ornette Coleman.&#8221; Ten seconds of Ornette, from his Pulitzer-Prize winning album <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sound-Grammar-Ornette-Coleman\/dp\/B000GFRE76\/?tag=howardmacom-20\">Sound Grammar<\/a>. &#8220;God, that&#8217;s unbearable. Ergo, it must be &#8216;good.'&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Slight correction: the &#8220;unbearable&#8221; excerpt featured Ornette playing violin, which even for fans of jazz beyond jazz can be an acquired taste. That&#8217;s okay, we know the truth, as opposed to the truthiness, of this bit.
