{"id":109,"date":"2008-07-29T14:03:09","date_gmt":"2008-07-29T18:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/wp\/2008\/07\/avantgarde_alert_brooklyn\/"},"modified":"2011-04-28T16:34:40","modified_gmt":"2011-04-28T20:34:40","slug":"avantgarde_alert_brooklyn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/jazzbeyondjazz\/2008\/07\/avantgarde_alert_brooklyn.html","title":{"rendered":"Odd noise music alert, Brooklyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A concert sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/content\/whitehousewar\/\">The Onion<\/a> &#8212; so expect to be amused, Wednesday July 30, starting at 6:30 pm, free in a tent by the Brooklyn waterfront:\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>John Zorn&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1m1pjR1AQbc\">Cobra<\/a>&#8221; &#8212; an intricate musical game performed best by quick-witted improvisers with a handle of tactics governing the Avalon Hill board <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wargame\">wargames<\/a> of the &#8217;60s &#8212; is being performed by an internation cast of a dozen such specialists (Zorn will be prompter, something between a card dealer and referee) &#8211;\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Followed by The Theremin Society, three specialists in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moogmusic.com\/theremin\/?section=product&amp;product_id=14\">no-touch sound controller <\/a>invented in the 1920s and used ever since mostly for eerie soundtrack effects &#8211;\u00c2\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Finally Jonathan Kane, here being promoted as a bluesman with his band <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OlLLVA29Irs\">February<\/a>, but I remember a performance piece in which he tap danced amplified big beats, and the hype is he&#8217;s also a montrous loud punk\/minimalist drummer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>I don&#8217;t know precisely where the historic Tobacco Warehouse of the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park section of the Brooklyn Bridge Park is, and since the concert there is free, starting early, standing room only and limited space at that, I might not tell you if I did, &#8217;cause there could be no room left for my little party. Maybe the jazz-beyond-jazz club members will run into each other looking for this unique lineup.
