Powell did not say whether he himself should be held<br \/>\naccountable for telling the U.N. and the people of the world, not to mention the American public,<br \/>\nthat he had categorical proof of WMD in Iraq.<br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>By a nice coincidence, The Washington Post reports today that the <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A2129-2005Jan11.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>hunt for WMD has finally ended<\/FONT><\/B><\/A><br \/>\nand that the so-called <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.cia.gov\/cia\/reports\/iraq_wmd_2004\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>interim report<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> submitted to<br \/>\nCongress last September by the chief U.S. weapons inspector Charles Duelfer &#8212; which<br \/>\n<I>&#8220;contradicted nearly every prewar assertion about Iraq made by top Bush administration<br \/>\nofficials&#8221;<\/I> &#8212; will stand as the &#8220;final conclusions&#8221; of the Iraq Survey Group &#8220;and will be<br \/>\npublished this spring.&#8221; <I>[Italics added.]<\/I><\/P><br \/>\n<P>One other point, sadly a minor one: Hundreds of millions of dollars were spent on the WMD<br \/>\nwild goose chase but, as the Post also reports, &#8220;there has been no public accounting of the<br \/>\nmoney.&#8221; Nor will there be. &#8220;A spokesman for the Pentagon&#8217;s Defense Intelligence Agency said the<br \/>\nentire budget and the expenditures would remain classified.&#8221; So much for accountability as we<br \/>\nhead toward the <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/newsArticle.jhtml?type=domesticNews&#038;storyID=7299333\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>inauguration behind barbed wire<\/FONT><\/B><\/A><br \/>\nof the biggest liar of them all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More pious words about accountability from the Bush regime, this time from Colin Powell on Kofi Annan and the oil-for-food scandal: &#8220;The [U.N.] secretary general will have to be accountable for those management problems,&#8221; Powell said yesterday, according to Reuters.
