{"id":995,"date":"2005-01-24T10:28:51","date_gmt":"2005-01-24T18:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2005\/01\/king_carson_rules_takes_up_spa\/"},"modified":"2005-01-24T10:28:51","modified_gmt":"2005-01-24T18:28:51","slug":"king_carson_rules_takes_up_spa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2005\/01\/king_carson_rules_takes_up_spa.html","title":{"rendered":"KING CARSON RULES, TAKES UP SPACE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In case anyone wants to know the relative historical importance of showbiz celebrity Johnny<br \/>\nCarson and Jan Nowak-Jezioranski, a revered World War II hero of the Polish underground who<br \/>\ndevoted his life to the cause of an independent Poland, the size of their obituaries in this morning&#8217;s<br \/>\nNew York Times ought to make it clear: Carson was by far the more significant figure.<br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P><A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/01\/24\/arts\/television\/24john.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>Carson&#8217;s obit<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, beginning on the<br \/>\nfront page, runs to 3,700 words (more than 10 times the length of Nowak-Jezioranski&#8217;s) and takes<br \/>\nup a full inside page. It is accompanied by a <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/01\/24\/arts\/24acar.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>663-word appreciation<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> and a <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/01\/24\/arts\/television\/24rcar.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>553-word report<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> on Carson&#8217;s<br \/>\ninability to quit writing jokes even in retirement. Over all, the Times print edition devoted 4,916<br \/>\nwords and nine photos to his life and career.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/01\/24\/international\/europe\/24nowak.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>Nowak-Jezioranski got 357<br \/>\nwords<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, one photo and placement in the middle of an inside page, below the<br \/>\n<A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/01\/24\/politics\/24woods.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>obit of Rose Mary Woods<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, the<br \/>\nformer secretary to Richard Nixon, who got 690 words and a photo.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Which, according to the Times&#8217;s ranking, makes Nowak-Jezioranski about twice as<br \/>\nunimportant as Woods and 10 times less important than Carson.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Nowak-Jezioranski&#8217;s &#8220;most famous achievement,&#8221; according to his obit, &#8220;was as the &#8216;Courier<br \/>\nfrom Warsaw,&#8217; making death-defying trips to London from Warsaw to bring news of the Polish<br \/>\nresistance&#8217;s activities to the government in exile and the Allies.&#8221; Among other activities, he &#8220;took<br \/>\npart in the failed 1944 Warsaw Uprising, in which 150,000 civilians were killed&#8221; and later<br \/>\ncampaigned &#8220;for improved Polish-Jewish relations,&#8221; repeatedly calling &#8220;for Poland to apologize<br \/>\nfor the 1941 massacre of hundreds of Jews in a northern town, Jedwabne.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Not incidentally, for the first time in its history, the <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.dw-world.de\/dw\/article\/0,1564,1467136,00.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>U.N. marks the liberation of the Nazi death camps<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> with<br \/>\ntoday&#8217;s special session of the General Assembly commemorating the 60th anniversary of the<br \/>\nliberation of Auschwitz (in Poland) by Soviet troops on Jan. 27, 1945.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The greatest achievement of Woods&#8217;s career was to &#8220;accidentally&#8221; erase a key portion of a<br \/>\nsecret Oval Office audiotape that recorded a June 20, 1972, conversation between Nixon and his<br \/>\nWhite House chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman, three days after the Watergate break-in. But Woods<br \/>\nwas modest about that accomplishment. She claimed she was responsible for &#8220;only about five<br \/>\nminutes&#8221; of the infamous 18-1\/2 minute gap in the tape, according to her obit.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Carson&#8217;s achievements were so many, it would be tedious to list them all. But according to his<br \/>\nobit, they included comedy sketches for &#8220;a variety of characters&#8221; such as &#8220;Art Fern, an<br \/>\nuntrustworthy salesman; Floyd R. Turbo, an opinionated bumpkin; Carnac the Magnificent, an<br \/>\nall-knowing seer; and Aunt Blabby, a gossipy old woman&#8221; [and] foils to which Mr. Carson<br \/>\nreturned time and time again &#8230; his doctor, Al Bendova; his accountants, H&#038;R Goniff; and his<br \/>\nlawyer, Bombastic Bushkin.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The Washington Post was even less moderate about Carson. It ran a total of 5,030 words<br \/>\nbetween <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A31991-2005Jan24.html?nav=hcmodule\"\ntarget='new\"'><FONT color=#003399><STRONG>his obit<\/B><\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><br \/>\nand <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A30970-2005Jan23.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>an appreciation<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> by Tom Shales.<br \/>\nAs might have been expected, the D.C. daily considered Woods almost twice as important as the<br \/>\nTimes did, giving her <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A30678-2005Jan23.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>1,016 words<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>.
