The premiere, a multimedia music-theater<br \/>\nperformance, was part of the cutting-edge <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/redcat.org\/season\/musicalexplorations.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>REDCAT Musical Exploration Series<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>.<br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>According to Osborne&#8217;s program notes:<\/P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>Cybeline is about a cyborg trying to be a talk show host to prove she is<br \/>\nhuman. It is about nature, virtual reality, biotechnology, and the mass media &#8212; and about finding<br \/>\nthe heart and poetry in technology as it also contemplates its horrors. What does a fifty-year-old<br \/>\nstructure of silicon have to teach a five-billion-year-old structure of carbon?<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>The reply is a mixed-media message involving:<\/P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>Schubert Lieder, the Egyptian Goddess Maat, Native American poetry,<br \/>\ndismemberment, trombone playing, a cyborg talkshow host, a talking hand, sacred cartoons, a<br \/>\nvengeful opera singer, a martyred math geek, Hildegard von Bingen, fighter jets, commercials for<br \/>\nsynthetic flesh, cyborgian attack dogs, and personality-enhancement chips, psalms, a country<br \/>\nwestern song, Mother Nature, and a tribute to Joni Mitchell . . . all integrated into a 45-minute,<br \/>\nsurround-sound, mini opera with computer-generated accompaniment, video and live<br \/>\nelectronics.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P><IMG src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/images\/song%20of%20week.jpg\"\nwidth=170 align=left border=0><\/A>This morning it is a pleasure to bring you the<br \/>\ncountry-western song from &#8220;Cybeline&#8221; called <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.osborne-conant.org\/Cybby-media\/Cowboy512.ram\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Number-Crunchin&#8217; Cowboy.<\/FONT><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> The lyrics and cartoons are by Conant, who also does the<br \/>\nsinging.
