The same guy who writes<br \/>\nunequaled columns about the <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/2004\/10\/13\/opinion\/edkristof.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>horrors of Darfur<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> can come up with <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/27\/opinion\/27kristof.html?oref=login&#038;hp\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>this weirdness<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> about the<br \/>\nIgnoramus in Chief:<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>[M]ost liberals have not revised their view that Mr. Bush is a nitwit. In fact,<br \/>\nI&#8217;m convinced that Mr. Bush is not only smarter, but also a better man than his critics believe.<br \/>\nMost important, he&#8217;s not a panderer.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>And that&#8217;s not all. &#8220;While Mr. Kerry zigs and zags on trade and Middle East policy,&#8221; Kristof<br \/>\nwrites, &#8220;Mr. Bush has a core of values and provides genuine leadership&#8221; <I>&#8212; [but, get this]<\/I><br \/>\n&#8212; &#8220;typically, I believe, in the wrong direction &#8230;&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Then he cites the Ignoramus&#8217;s &#8220;grim willingness to raise gas prices during his re-election<br \/>\ncampaign&#8221; &#8212; which, Kristof allows, is &#8220;foolish economically&#8221; and &#8220;crazy politically&#8221; &#8212; as a sign of<br \/>\n&#8220;a solidity of character and convictions.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Some might call Kristof&#8217;s remarks nuanced or even-handed. I call it nuts. It staggers belief. It<br \/>\nalso makes you wonder what medication Kristof is on. By his fuzzy logic Osama bin Laden<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t zig and zag either. He&#8217;s got a core of values, too. And the way he&#8217;s been motivating his<br \/>\ntroops, he sure as hell is providing genuine leadership, albeit in the wrong direction. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>There&#8217;s a long list of non-zig-zaggers you could name who fit Kristof&#8217;s peculiar thinking.<br \/>\nHitler, Stalin, Mao for starters. They showed the world a core of values and demonstrated<br \/>\ngenuine leadership in the wrong direction. The Ignoramus nowhere near deserves to be elevated<br \/>\ninto those ranks, thank gawd. But that&#8217;s poor consolation.<br \/>\n<P><B>Postscript<\/B> just in from <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040401.shtml#76400\"\ntarget='new\"'><STRONG><FONT color=#003399>Freilich<br \/>\nCentral:<\/B><\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/A><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>KRISTOF CLEAR<\/STRONG><br \/>\n<P>The man of conviction&#8217;s to be admired;<br \/>\n<DIV>He&#8217;s focused, clever and inspired<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV>And leads with the old rallying cry,<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV>Ours but to do and die.<\/DIV><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Will somebody please explain what&#8217;s wrong with Nicholas Kristof?
