But here&#8217;s a <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/national\/AP-Tampa-Tribune-No-Endorsement.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>pleasant surprise<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> from a totally<br \/>\nRepublican newspaper: &#8220;Why We Cannot Endorse President Bush For Re-Election.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>As stewards of the [Tampa] Tribune&#8217;s editorial voice, we find it unimaginable<br \/>\nto not be lending our voice to the chorus of conservative-leaning newspapers endorsing the<br \/>\npresident&#8217;s re-election. We had fully expected to stand with Bush, whom we endorsed in 2000. &#8230;<br \/>\n<P>But we are unable to endorse President Bush for re-election because of his mishandling of the<br \/>\nwar in Iraq, his record deficit spending, his assault on open government and his failed promise to<br \/>\nbe a &#8220;uniter not a divider&#8221; within the United States and the world.<\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>It&#8217;s less surprising that Kerry&nbsp;failed to&nbsp;get their endorsement either &#8212; Tampa&#8217;s<br \/>\nmugwumps decided to sit this one out &#8212; and&nbsp;no surprise&nbsp;that the Ignoramus in Chief<br \/>\nwon endorsements from the Chicago Tribune, Rocky Mountain News in Denver, the Arizona<br \/>\nRepublic in Phoenix, and the Dallas Morning News. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Here&#8217;s the Associated Press&#8217;s comprehensive <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/national\/AP-Newspaper-Endorsements.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>list of endorsements<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> from dailies<br \/>\nlarge and small across the country: 19 for Kerry, 15 for Bush.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Postscript:<\/STRONG> The Washington Post has yet to declare its choice, but<br \/>\njudging from today&#8217;s lead editorial <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A40640-2004Oct17.html\"><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>on civil liberties and terrorism<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> it&#8217;s leaning toward Kerry. The<br \/>\nLos Angeles Times has not endorsed a presidential candidate in more than three decades.<br \/>\n<B><FONT color=#003399><A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.editorandpublisher.com\/eandp\/news\/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=10006\n42448\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>This year it may break<br \/>\ntradition<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>,<\/FONT><\/B> but so far tradition holds.
