They<br \/>\nwere right. He was a burned-out rock star. Then he went into a bar and heard a small jazz band.<br \/>\nSuddenly he felt inspired. &#8220;It was mostly the singer,&#8221; he says. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>In what&#8217;s believed to be his first <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=4080202\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>broadcast interview<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> in 19 years<br \/>\n&#8212; to promote his new memoir <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0743228154\/qid=1097682656\/sr=2-1\/ref=pd_\nka_b_2_1\/103-6861453-4660622\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Chronicles,<br \/>\nVolume One&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> &#8212; Dylan talks about&nbsp;how&nbsp;every day he still thinks<br \/>\nof quitting&nbsp;and why he&#8217;s bothered when people call him &#8220;the voice of his generation.&#8221; He<br \/>\nsays simply, &#8220;these colossal accolades and titles, they get in the way.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Is he back on track? Judging from the concert at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, N.Y.,<br \/>\nwhich opened his tour this summer with Willie Nelson,&nbsp;<A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040801.shtml#84561\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>I didn&#8217;t think so<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> then. And<br \/>\njudging from the tone&nbsp;of his NPR interview yesterday, I don&#8217;t think he thinks so now. But<br \/>\nmore than any other poet\/songwriter of our time, including all the&nbsp;Beatles,&nbsp;Bob<br \/>\nDylan is irreplaceable. Also&nbsp;unstoppable.
