Some might even think it&#8217;s the difference between smart and stupid.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>In the opinion of The New York Times, &#8220;Bush delivered an inexplicably defiant campaign<br \/>\nspeech&#8221; yesterday at the U.N.&nbsp;His &#8220;tone-deaf speechwriters achieved a perverse kind of<br \/>\nalchemy, transforming a golden opportunity into a lead balloon.&#8221; In the opinion of the Los<br \/>\nAngeles Times, &#8220;Bush on Tuesday dispensed with the red-meat phrases beloved by his supporters<br \/>\non the campaign trail. &#8230; Instead, the president was conciliatory, intent to show that he can play<br \/>\nwith others.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>We looked online for editorials about <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2004\/09\/20040921-3.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>the speech<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>&nbsp;in The<br \/>\nWashington Post, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, the Boston Globe,<br \/>\nthe Houston Chronicle, the Dallas Morning News, the Atlanta Constitution and the Miami Herald.<br \/>\nThere were none. Most were still stuck on the CBS flap. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Newsday&#8217;s <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/opinion\/ny-vpirq223980355sep22,0,2063768.story?coll=ny\n-editorials-headlines\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>milquetoast<br \/>\neditorial<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> was less of an opinion than a news analysis with a pussyfoot<br \/>\nheadline: &#8220;President&#8217;s rosy view of region&#8217;s fate is belied by government reports.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe&nbsp;writer must have had&nbsp;Super Sugar Crisp cereal for breakfast:&nbsp;&#8220;Bush<br \/>\nreiterated that the world was better off without Saddam Hussein in power and that Iraq was on its<br \/>\nway to becoming a democracy.&#8221; <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.phrases.org.uk\/bulletin_board\/27\/messages\/323.html\"><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Gee whillikens<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, imagine that.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Did I forget to mention the Washington Times? Nah, here&#8217;s&nbsp;their <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washtimes.com\/op-ed\/20040921-085106-3350r.htm\"><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>worthless opinion<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>: The &#8220;president forcefully rebutted<br \/>\nassertions that the United States had rushed to war last year in order to remove Saddam Hussein<br \/>\nfrom power.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>And then there was the New York Post. No milquetoast pussyfooting for Murdoch&#8217;s minions.<br \/>\nThe headline &#8220;DUBYA IN THE DESPOT&#8217;S DEN&#8221; came up short of &#8220;HEADLESS BODY IN<br \/>\nTOPLESS BAR.&#8221; But&nbsp;<A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/opinion\/ny-vpirq223980355sep22,0,2063768.story?coll=ny\n-editorials-headlines\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>their<br \/>\nopinion<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> was that &#8220;Bush, for his part, got it exactly right at the United Nations<br \/>\nyesterday.&#8221; We all know the New York Post exists in a parallel universe, don&#8217;t we?<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The difference between a lead ballon and making nice at the United Nations may be the distance between the East Coast and the West Coast.
